Folk
Folk are not so much a subspecies of gnome as they are a mutation. Unlike Gnomes, which are occasionally seen on the surface, folk are never seen above ground, and humans on the surface only really have vague descriptions from gnomes that can be coaxed into speaking about them. The most common descriptors of folk are that they are entirely blind, as opposed to dark-sighted, have way too many pointed teeth, and move more like feral animals, rather than smaller than average people. They cannot be communicated or reasoned with and that, perhaps, is what makes them most frightening.
Not much is known about the creation folk, though it has been theorized that they are created when exposed for long periods of time to Fey Magic which has seeped into the rocks, ores and underground flora and fauna that gnomes subside on.
It is thought that the reason for this is because despite (or perhaps because of) the fact that Fey and gnomes are loosely related, Fey magic acts like a virus, attacking a gnome’s inherent magic, twisting it as it tries to gain dominance over the gnome’s magic before ultimately creating something else altogether. It is not known how long this process takes, whether it is instantaneous or takes place over the course of hours, weeks, or months.
This theory has not been tested for accuracy, though gnomes living aboveground in Lumin and other Fey infested countries don’t seem to experience any adverse effects in doing so. However, gnomes seem to prefer to avoid the Fey whenever possible when living on the surface.
Survivors of these attacks are usually found by starry hillopes, which have been known to bring orphaned or injured gnomes up to the surface near cities or other settlements in order to boost the gnomes’ chances of survival.
Basic Information
Anatomy
There isn’t a whole lot known about what the Folk look like, though it’s generally accepted that while they used to be people, they more closely resemble animals, or Eldritch Fey
Ecology and Habitats
These creatures live exclusively underground, deep below the surface where sunlight never reaches. They are so averse to the surface, in fact, that some theorize that they might just burn to dust if sunlight were to ever touch them.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Folk are consummate carnivores. They are known for roaming the underground, attacking any living thing they come across. This includes gnomes. Cannibalizing gnomes is probably what the folk are best known and most feared for. They hunt by scent and instinct alone.
Additional Information
Geographic Origin and Distribution
Found underground everywhere but theorized to stay closer to Lumin.
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Folk are entirely blind and instead seem to rely on smell to find their prey.
