Veryn

"Veryn" is the name given to the pirate who haunts the waters surrounding the Ascendant Vortex in the Evereddy Sea. She is a borderline mythical creature, and stories surrounding her, her crew, and her ship vary widly from teller to teller. Sometimes, the ship - most often named the Sapphire Mist - is a small sloop, slipping up next to a larger cargo vessel under cover of night and stealing their cargo right from under their noses, before zipping off on a phantom wind that fill only her sails. Other stories claim the ship is nearly the size of a kraken, able to open its bow and swallow smaller ships whole. A rather befuddled young sailor claimed it was a mighty frigate, threatening to blow them out of the water with 10 cannons. However, after they surrendered their cargo, the ship shrank and its cannons disappeared. Then the ship just sank itself beneath the waves. The sailor could hardly fathom the pointlessness of it all - all that cargo lost, and no gain on either side. There is another, much more dubious, myth about Baron Hartosso's vessel. While he was riding up the Ascendant Vortex, the Sapphire Mist rammed into the belly of his ship from inside the vortex, knocking it out of the flow of the Vortex and sending it tumbling down into the rushing waters below. This myth seems both impractical and out of character for Veryn, as none of her other stories of piracy indicate a penchant for destruction or injury. Likely it was just sailors using the tragedy to create a narrative of "just punishment," after Hortosso's history of illegal slave trade became public knowledge.   Regardless of the size and layout of the ship, the hull is always described as a single, unbroken piece of blue crystal. The captain is always described as a blue-skinned woman in a sharp coat, though the descriptions of her outfit and her hair are constantly in flux. Her crew, too, is always described differently - dwarves, dragonborn, gnomes, and even a tabaxi have been described. A few sailors even swore that they saw faces they'd known - people who had disappeared after falling overboard.   It is the opinion of this scholar that "Veryn" is a fantastic con, an adept illusionist, who has built a name for herself out of nothing more than hijinks and hearsay. It is likely that she simply sails a small trading vessel and creates illusions to turn the hull blue or to sink beneath the surface. And impressive feat of magic, perhaps, but this still makes her nothing more than an adept grifter. Her dual role as both a villain to traders and just retribution to wrongdoers, as in the case of Hortosso, makes her a fantastic story element that sailors can slip into any role. Her magically shapeshifting ship allows a storyteller to use her in nearly any ship-based narrative, even those originating from far out of the Evereddy Sea. Thus, her reputation balloons from simple pirate to honorable folk hero.
