Liaari

Background

Taken in by the orphanage at a very young age, Liaari has always been somewhat of an outsider. They never showed any interest in combat training, nor in doing things the "proper, traditional" way.   Having an eye for the mechanical and precise clockwork, they started to liven up training by tinkering with special arrows, bolts, and primitive automatons. These innovations caused problems and irritated the mostly traditionally minded members of the Shadar-kai, but that did not stop them from learning and eventually building some actually useful items.   Catching the attention of Isylne Dorceran, the head of the orphanage house, word eventually reached Illvan himself, of a member of the house that was delving in technology not before seen anywhere in elven territory. By this time, Liaari was already experimenting with arcane magic, mostly as a power source for their innovations, mostly because they did not really have much faith in divine powers.   Eventually the two leaders agreed on establishing a small shack outside of the main house, but still inside the grounds, to keep any explosive mishaps from damaging their property too much, but still allowing them to keep a very close eye on Liaari. Illvan also discreetly put out word among his houses that any exotic materials or arcane items should be brought to him directly, who would in turn take it to Liaari for examination and experimentation.   In time, Liaari established a good relationship with both the members of their house, as well as neighboring wood elves, crafting small useful trinkets in exchange for knowledge, gold, materials, and magical services.

Recent research

More recently, Liaari was asked to look into the damage done to Khon Lodar and the Ruined Shadar-kai house, without much success.

Innovations

These are all items that Liaari usually crafts to barter with passing wood elves, or to equip members of their house.
  • Spellstones: small gems encrusted in an enchanted metal frame that allow the storing of magical energy for later use
    • Allows someone to store a spell slot up to 3rd level, for up to 13 days. Requires a bonus action to release the energy back into the user, shattering the stone in the process
  • Shatterbolts: heavier than average crossbow bolts or arrowheads that shatter on impact, throwing high velocity shrapnel in an area
    • They act as +1 ammunition. On impact, every creature within 10 ft. must make a DC 14 Dexterity saving throw, suffering 2d4 piercing damage on a failed save, or half as much on a success
  • Jumper Jacks: special boots that can store electrical charges while walking, and that can release that charge in a violent manner, propelling the user
    • Once per long rest, the wearer can use a bonus action to release the accumulated charge, choosing to be propelled 20 ft. upwards or horizontally. These do not negate any fall damage.
  • Super Glue: a vial of a thick grey liquid that can be used to repair small to medium objects, making any break or tear imperceptible
    • Has 3 charges, spending one charge can mend any break or tear up to 1 foot in size. Spending all 3 charges can mend any break or tear up to 5 feet in size.
    • Attempting to apply more than 3 charges of this glue can lead to unstable results
  • Arcane lockpicks: enchanted set of thieves' tools that can silently break most lock-related enchantments
    • When used to unlock something, these tools will negate any ongoing Arcane Lock spell, as well as dispel any magical traps connected to the locking mechanism. After doing so, their magic is expended, and they behave like normal thieves' tools
