The Great Conjunction

Is it a Myth or Historical Event

The Great Conjunction occurs every 1500 years. It is remarkable in that all the planets in this particular system come into alignment. The historical records indicate that when it approaches complete alignment the veils between planes weaken allowing beings to cross over to planes that are not their own.

Summary

The coming of the Great Conjunction brings with it a battle for the heart of Calandyrion between the gods Mitra (LG) and Set (CE). Whichever of these gods wins will set the tone for life over the next 1500 years. Will life be ruled by Order or Chaos?

Historical Basis

The last Great Conjunction occurred almost 1500 years ago. A cloistered cleric of Mitra built a temple to the god Mitra in an isolated area of the Central Mountain Range where he could worship and train others in the Mitraic religion while living in peace and solitude. Over time, a small village, affectionately called Mitra’s Fist, sprang up around the temple. Unknown to Jemgretor the Great Conjunction was drawing nigh. What Jemgretor did know was that followers of Set were preparing to summon their God and the rise of evil grew. Jemgretor organized his followers to resist the growth of Set’s evil believers.

Soon a black tower rose out of the ground alongside Mitra’s temple and the skies darkened blocking the sun’s light from the land. As the evil grew and the world lay under siege Manahath, one of Sets sons, appeared from the dark tower. As the conjunction reached its zenith Jemgretor faced Manahath on the field of battle while his followers prepared a spell to close the portal to Hell.

Jemgretor and Manahath fought long and hard. Their spells made more powerful by the “Wild Magic” destroyed much of Mitra’s Fist and as the day neared its end Jemgretor cast a spell that caused the ground to open beneath their feet, the other clerics cast their spell sealing the portal to Hell once again and both the temple and the dark tower sank into the earth.

Spread

The history of the Great Conjunction is not well known by the common people and few of those believe it even happened. It is however known to the educated rulers of Calandyrion, mages, clerics, some bards and sages, it is certain that there would be note of it in the great libraries of Smetium.

Mages will know about it due to the changes that occur to magic during this time as magic starts to become wild and possibly unpredictable.

Clerics will know generally of it from their religious teachings. Although, Clerics of Mitra or Set will have a deeper knowledge of the events in Calandyrion from the last occurrence.

Some Bards may have learned songs that mention it, but the Sages will have written extensive histories of this historical event.

In Art

Some artisans have created tapestries showing the battle of Jemgretor and Manahath. Jemgretor is seen fighting with his cudgel while Manahath is depicted as a reptilian creature with two heads and four arms. Manahath is shown with lightning bolts coming from two of his arms while his tail is seen trying to ensnare Jemgretor.
