The Starship Void Chaser is a ship that can operate in deep space and in atmospheres away from all civilization for up to six months at a time. It has antimatter pulse engines for going sub-light speeds, ion engines for navigating space, and electric turbofans for flight in an atmosphere. It can generate power from its fusion reactor, from solar sails, from a kerosene turbine, or from charged capacitors.

While much of the information here is the same as the main article, this article is much more in depth, explaining various details of the construction and systems of the starship Void Chaser. Still a work in progress though while I edit the original writing.

Construction

Frame, Outer Shell, Walls
The frame of the Void Chaser is made mostly of aluminum composites with steel support where necessary. This provides a lightweight but sturdy frame. While stronger and lighter materials do exist, Aluminum and steel can be easily gathered even on lower tech worlds and makes repairing a damaged ship much easier and faster. This is also a way to tell the age of the Void Chaser as most modern Regalti ships tend to be made mostly of Graphene or Titanium.

The Outer shell of the Void Chaser is made of a graphene composite that absorbs extreme heat and light radiation, dissipating most of the energy harmlessly back into space, and adding minimal amounts to the ship's capacitor. This also acts as an excellent insulator, keeping the inside of the ship a constant 23.5 degrees with minimal refridgeration or cooling needed unless the Void Chaser is too close to a star or on a particularly hot or cold world.

The walls and floors inside the ship are made of thin sheets of various metals and synthetic materials and are filled with Graphene Aerogel. This soundproofs the walls of the ship and also allows individual rooms to be climate controlled. This is important on a ship that employs up to five alien species at any given time all with their own temperature preferences. This also makes the walls of the ship nearly as strong as the frame and on certain stress points, it might be even stronger.
 
Repair Drones
The Void Chaser does not have a dedicated structural engineer on board. The two mechanics Wyorin Zipk and Toring Qerjan both have basic structural knowledge of the ship, but if major repairs are required and the ship can't be brought to port, there is technology that helps with that.

The Void Chaser is equipped with a set of all purpose Repair Drones, with the blueprint of the Void Chaser loaded into them. Three of the drones are about the size of a large dog. the rest are smaller and several are micro scale in size. This allows the drones to reach almost any area on the ship to repair it. These drones also double as cleaning machines and keep every part of the ship nearly spotless at all times.

If repairs are needed, the drones will go to the damaged area, and using the Void Chaser plans, will 3D print a new part or print a repair for a damaged part. The drones can use several materials for the printing process and the Void Chaser has dedicated storage space for this material.

These aren't meant to be permanent repairs but in some situations the structural nature of the 3D printed repair is stronger than the original undamaged area. The repairs are meant to make the ship air and space worthy, and to get it to port as quickly as possible. The repair drones also can't repair complex machinery, their job is mainly structural. That's what the mechanics are for.

Power Systems

Primary: Antimatter Fusion Reactor
The Fusion reactor in the Void Chaser is capable of generating 200 MW (Mega Watts) of usable power for the ship's various systems. It works by fusing Helium-3 into Helium-4 and releasing 2 protons and a massive amount of energy. (See Helium Fusion)

The initial nuclear reaction is started by injecting several Anti-Deuterium atoms into the fusable mass. This obliterates some of the Helium-3, releasing massive amounts of energy, heating the fuel enough to cause fusion. This also starts up the lasers and magnets required to contain the fusion reaction. Nearly all of the released heat energy is converted to electricity and stored in several large capacitors. The Helium-4 is sent to be stored for later use by the ship's different propulsion systems.

The Fusion system can also be overloaded by injecting antimatter while fusion is occuring, releasing even more energy. Using this method, the reactor is capable of generating up to 600MW of energy, but it wears down the system faster. It is possible to release even more energy, up to a full gigawatt or more, but the resulting energy released from the antimatter explosion basically blows out the reactor and the entire back of the ship.

There used to be a large firewall between the engines/reactor area that could take the force of a reactor failure, protecting the crew, but the latest ship overhaul that upgraded the engines greatly reduced the wall's thickness. Part of the ship can be blown away if the reactors ever fail...

Secondary: Solar Sails
The ship has several large Solar Sails in its wings and tail for gathering energy from nearby stars and can generate 25MW of power on its own. Most of the ship's outer skin is actually photovoltaic in nature, and while it can collect minimal amounts of starlight, it's primary use is to absorb light based weaponry.

Opening the solar sails while operating the Void Chaser in an atmosphere in most situations is ill advised, especially the wing sails. The resulting aerodynamic drag will greatly slow the speed of the ship, and might possibly rip the sails off the wing, and even damage the wing. The rear facing sail on the tail could possible be opened even at maximum speed in flight, but unless the ship is angles towards the light it wouldn't matter anyways. If the ship is on the ground or water then the wing sails can't open at all.

Secondary: Kerosene Turbine
In emergencies, the ship also has around 20,000 liters of kerosene fuel for running a Turbine Engine that provides additional thrust and power. The 50MW of power it generates can be routed to the ships electric turbo fans to provide the rest of the thrust required for flight. It is literally just enough to get off the ground and fly at low speeds. At these lower speeds, most of the solar sails can be opened to provide additional power without damaging them.

The default fuel used is a synthetic kerosene blend, but the turbine can actually run on a variety of fuels. It can also run on gasoline and diesel fuel or whatever combustible fluid the ship's molecular harvester can pull out of a planet's atmosphere. Most fuels are less efficient than the default fuel and the turbine has to recalibrated every time.


Batteries
The Void Chaser has four large powerbanks, capable of storing 1,000 MWh of total power. This can run the ship's systems for several weeks, and in combination with the solar sails, can run just the life support systems for nearly a year. If it is used excessively for propulsion purposes, the energy storage might not last more than a few hours.

The Primary Purpose of these batteries is to store enough energy to fire the main cannon at full power, which requires 860 Gigajoules of power to fire a single shot. This requires about 15 minutes of charging to get the rquired power, but that's if all power from the ship is being routed to charge them. Usually, half of the power is reserved for life support, unplanned ship maneuvers, and the shields. Because of this, it actually takes 30 minutes for a full charge.

Depending on where the ship is docked, it can't run its fusion reactor as it's exhaust will contribute to warming the surrounding space port and city to uncomfortable levels and it's just plain against the law on many worlds. This isn't an issue as the ship can take off without use of the antimatter reactors by charging its main capacitor, which can hold about 500MWh of power, which is enough to take off and sustain roughly two hours of flight, or fire the main cannon twice. The ship can be plugged in to an external source to charge its capacitors faster.

Medical Rooms
The Void Chaser is equipped with a pretty standard Medical bay, with a genetic analyzer, operating tables, surgical equipment, and a large selection of medicine.

There are two medical officers aboard the ship, Elya Sarai and Raini For. Despite their young age and both being Regalti, they handle the medical needs of everyone on the ship, regardless of species. 99% of their job does boil down to drawing blood and doing the necessary lab work, analyzing it to ensure crew health, but they have the skills and tools to perform complex surgeries if needed.

There are also two side rooms with considerably more advanced tech. Each room contains a Nanite Bed, which utilizes nanomachines to repair and rebuild badly damaged tissue. Advanced organ repair like replacing an entire heart is not possible, though the Nanite Beds systems can keep a patient alive until transfer to a more advanced medical facility can happen.

Some of the other medical devices onboard the ship include injections of the Sapient's Drink, nanomachines for Eye Interfacing and Brain Interfacing, Auto-Splints, and many more.
Medical Rooms

Moleculer Harvester
The Void Chaser has an onboard harvester to collect and convert matter in nearly any atmosphere. It is usually calibrated to collect its major fuel sources, Kerosene and Helium-3. It does not have antimatter conversion capability. The Void Chaser can also fly into thicker atmospheres of gas giants to collect both fuel sources much faster. This can also collect Water, Oxygen, and nearly any other liquid or gas once calibrated.

The Void Chaser can also land directly on water and either collect water directly, or use the water to directly convert into other useful elements. It is not recommended this be done on sea water, as salt can clog up the harvester system. On some worlds, there are much more corrosive molecules dissolved in water than salt, so if the content is unknown, it isn't recommended to directly land on and use any liquid at all.
Molecular Conversion Room

Algae Bioreactor
The Vansail is equipped with a single Algae Bioreactor with several attached machines to filter water. It can convert up to 25,000 gallons of waste water per day into reuseable water for cleaning and drinking. The reactor can also supply additional food and oxygen for the crew and gives the Void Chaser the ability to stay out in space or hostile environments for longer periods of time.

As a last resort if the molecular converter is malfuntioning, the bioreactor can be used to make hydrogen, which can then be used for thruster propellant or used for fuel in the ship's fusion reactor.

Also attached to the bioreactor are several small Hydroponics trays that can be used to grow edible plants. As the ship's primary mechanic, Wyorin Zipk maintains the bioreactor, and he also uses the hydroponics trays to grow his favorite food: Helioberries. At the other crew member's request he'll also cultivate various other small fruits, vegetables and spices to make the 3D printed food taste just slightly less bland. The only other fresh food options on the ship are frozen in the cargo bay freezer, and there isn't much space available so it either gets cooked and consumed in the first month of the trip or it is rationed throughout.

On the Command Deck, attached to the lunch room is a Food Printer that will create food from raw materials. In the next room over is storage for the three macro nutrients (Fat, Carbohydrates, Protein), many dozens of vitamins and minerals, flavor and color compounds. It primarily uses cellulose harvested from algae to create the texture of the food. It can Print and then heat up almost any food that can be sucessfully programmed into it. It has an attached oven for manual cooking too.

While it does sound like an impressive piece of machinery, usually, it is only cabable of printing dense, textured (but tasty?) blocks of nutrients. Some crew members prefer the 3D printed mush to the alternative even less tasty Military Rations. Others try to survive as long as possible on the ship's fresh food provisions and frozen food stored in the cargo bay, but that has only ever lasted a month or so.
 

Leisure

Kaline's Meditation Room
As designed, this room is an overflow sleeping area, with foldout beds from the walls, able to sleep as many as 24 people. Uul doesn't often transport passengers, so Kaline Serna convinced Uul to let her use the otherwise empty room. From her home country, Kaline brought a table, mats, cushions, and several other furniture items.

All of the Regalti Crew members often come to this room to relax, drink tea, and meditate in a nearly technology free area. The room is almost entirely quiet except the sounds of flowing liquid from the molecular converter and the quiet humming of the ship's capacitors in the next rooms over. Kaline allows any crew member in there, though she has yet to sucessfully convince any of the Yil or Vusinor to relax and have a cup of tea with her, with the exception of Sharla Anri. To the Fevarik Regalti onboard, it feels just a little bit like home.

Kaline also set up a shrine for the Fevarik Goddesses Vala and Sevi on one wall, with the God Ventar on the other. While the other species on the ship don't care for religion, many Regalti consider the practice of their religion to be essential, even in this space age. Every month Kaline, Cordir, and Elya will perform a Feather Burning Ritual to honor the gods.
