Euphrexetes: The Guard

God of The Afterlife

Euphrexetes (a.k.a. The Guard)

Euphrexetes, or The Guard as he is sometimes known, is lord of The Afterlife. Some may call it ‘The Beyond.’ Others, ‘The Underworld.’ The names of it are as varied as the nations of the world, but in reality they are all one and the same. This is the domain of The Guard, and here he crafts an afterlife for each soul that crosses his threshold. When souls are brought by the ferry piloted by Yecha, The Ferrywoman, Wife of The Guard, they are judged one by one by Neresim, the Judge of Souls, who passes them over to The Guard. He takes the judgement and crafts for the soul a unique afterlife, based on their memories. Here the souls remain for as long as their name is remembered, after which they vanish back into the cycle of souls and are reincarnated. The Guard is often depicted as a bare chested spartan like warrior wearing a bronze corinthian helm and carrying a large, round shield. As one of the first eight gods created by The Potter, The Guard is one of the 'First Children.' He is also completely neutral in the struggle between the Black and White divinities, preferring to keep to his own affairs.

Divine Domains

The divine domain most often associated with The Guard is the Death Domain.

Holy Books & Codes

Many passages in the Pantheon Apocrypha are dedicated to Euphrexetes. Indeed, a whole book is set aside pertaining to his relationship and marriage to Yecha, The Ferrywoman.

Divine Symbols & Sigils

Unsurprisingly, the most common representation of Euphrexetes is that of a corinthian helm.

Tenets of Faith

Euphrexetes is odd in that he requires no real belief. All he requires is that mortals believe their deaths will all, one day, come.

Holidays

The seventh season of the year, The Season of The Guard, is named after Euphrexetes. Also, on the 41st day of that season, mortals celebrate All Souls Day, a day dedicated to Euphrexetes and Yecha. Every four years, The Season of The Guard has a 42nd day, Ancestors Day, where mortals prepare elaborate feasts, setting places for each family member who has passed over to the care of Euphrexetes since the last Ancestors Day.
