Claid Shinor

Land of The Green Death

In comparison to its northern neighbor, Otria, Claid Shinor is a land of desperation and fear. Jungles make up over eighty percent of it’s area, and the land that is not, on the coasts of the Mirrored Sea and the Star Sea, is so rife with dangerous predators, that even the smallest hamlet is walled in stone. The people here hunt to survive, ranging forth in large parties to bring down mighty Tyrannosaurus, or immense diplodocus. The skins and pelts they harvest make for fine trade goods and the meat can feed a village for weeks on end. The king collects a tithe in skins once per year, enforced by heavily mailed enforcers who traverse the land in a group hundreds strong.

Structure

Due to the small number of settlements and low population of Claid Shinor, there are only two ranks of power. The King is the ultimate authority in the country, and the twelve barons answer directly to him.

Culture

Claidians are hardy and tough. They have to be. Stepping outside the walls of their settlements can mean death. In fact, staying inside them can sometimes mean death too, but they don't let this deter them. Strong and hale, these folk find the honor and value in strength, and learn to appreciate the little things in life, as you re never sure when they might be taken away.

Demography and Population

In Claid Shinor, to live outside the walls is death, so over ninety percent of the population live in walled towns and villages. There are no settlements here large enough to be called cities. Over sixty percent of the population is human, although the nation attracts it fair share of hardy, or insane folk, willing to risk the danger of the jungles. There are rumors, however, of reclusive tribes of Wood Elves, Centaur, Firbolg, and even Halflings, that call the jungles home.

Territories

Over eighty percent of Claid Shinor is covered in jungles, from the shores of the mirrored sea in the West and South, to the shores of the Star Sea in the East. The only real break from this is in the North, towards the border with Otria. This is where the capital fortress of Bower Castle and the nations few areas of good farmland exist.

Military

To sat that Claid Shinor has a military is a gross overstatement. Each of the twelve Barons has a standing force comprising of either local thugs too violent to be hunters, or mercenary troops. They are all paid well from the proceeds of selling pelts and other trinkets from the jungles. The King has a larger standing force, better trained, armed, and paid, but no more clean. The main point of this force is to travel the land once a year, collecting pelts from the Barons as a tithe for the King.

Technological Level

Claid Shinor has an odd mix of Technological aptitude and a stubborn unwillingness to adapt to it. Firearms make hunting the beasts of the jungle much easier, but traditionalist say it spoils the meat. Semi-Automated tanning procedures allow for the production of more hides, but some say it lowers the quality. The Legion Of Progress is trying to change attitudes here, but isn't having much luck.

Religion

Like all nations in Caeteria, The Pantheon is the official religion in Claid Shinor. Many Claidians pay particular homage to The Stag, Bekeus, and The Gladiator, Vokak.

Foreign Relations

Claid Shinor has very little time to make nice with the world beyond it's borders. At the same time, this means they have very little time to care about waging war. Claidians only look outwards when threatened, and currently that only causes them to look towards Eucrus, who have been raiding their eastern jungles for rare minerals and lumber.

Agriculture & Industry

If there is one thing that Claid Shinor has in abundance, it is dangerous creatures, and a burgeoning trade has set up in hunting these creatures, not just for meat, but for their pelts, bones, teeth, and any other parts that might be useful. Others still capture the beasts alive, and export them for huge sums of gold, although this venture is fraught with risk.

Trade & Transport

Claid Shinor has two port towns, Hows on the shores of the inland Mirrored Sea in the west, and Fort Crush on the shores of the Star Sea in the east. Any overseas goods are brought into the country in this way. For overland trade, some roads do enter the nation, but they do not travel far before turning to well worn dirt tracks. Maintaining and guarding the roads within the borders is dangerous, and most caravans run heavily armed.

Education

By global Caeterian standards, the people of Claid Shinor are highly uneducated. To the people that live there, education is viewed differently. Why waste your time learning history or poetry from a book, when the bards sing tales of the mightiest hunters with the strongest arms and the sharpest aim? Only the nobles or those who really have to learn much in the way of 'educated' topics.

Infrastructure

Claid Shinor has something that most other nations do not. Every settlement has walls. Indeed, a new settlement here will often build it's walls before it's first houses. How else are the people to keep safe from the beasts of the jungles?
