Imaginary Fiends
Sociological studies among various humanoid races have confirmed that almost all of them have the concept of "imaginary friends", friends who only exist in a person's imagination, instead of physical reality. Although rare, it is possible for this "imaginary" friend to manipulate physical reality. In almost all cases, these have been the result of the person subconsciously using magical or psionic powers and blaming their imaginary friend, the "imaginary" friend being a ghost, or someone using illusion magic. Magologists, however, have listed several dozen instances where all other possibilities were disproven, leaving only the hypothesis of an actual invisible, insubstantial entity becoming someone's friend, and possessing abilities that are far more powerful than their friend. While controversial, their existence is considered more likely than the alternative, namely that the current Unified Magic Theory is greatly lacking.
This makes the following quite troubling: several species of monsters have also been discovered to have imaginary friends. Beholders and dragons are the most well-known cases, but hell hounds have also been seen to play games with invisible insubstantial entities that could not be detected by magical means, but which nevertheless could do things like throw a ball. Whereas the hypothetical entities for humanoids have been simply labeled "Imaginary Friends" by magologists (although they often use the Celestial translation, so as to more clearly differentiate from regular "imaginary friends"), the monster equivalent has been labeled the Imaginary Fiend.
As of yet, no actual cases of Imaginary Fiends have been uncovered, although magologists point to a promising lead: two Spectators, forced to guard a treasure together, each came up with an imaginary friend during their time together. Although Xyx and Yxy have become more mentally stable after they were recruited by Dungeon Burger, their beliefs in their imaginary friends, with the peculiar names of Alan and Steve, have not faded, and several Dungeon Burger employees have testified to situations they believe the imaginary friends are responsible for, key among them the slaughter of a clan of vampires. Research into whether Xyx and Yxy indeed have Imaginary Fiends has been stymied, however, by the president of Dungeon Burger, Bob, who does not wish for the existence of Alan and/or Bob to be proven, because "then I would have to pay them".
