Ald'oui Badlands

I wonder what a man must be running from, for his destination to be Ald'oui

Geography

The Ald'oui Badlands extend south from the Lower Brigmus Peaks. A bleak landscape of rocks, brambles, and sand, there is little to see for miles and miles. Jagged canyons and looming mesas are the only exception to the monotony of these vistas.       The Perquito River rushes down from the Brigmus Peaks and makes its lazy way through the badlands. Some of the only hospitable land is right there on its banks. Some of the local tribes have discovered underground caves with their own water supplies, which allows them to stay hidden.   Travel south far enough, and the terrain gives way to the dunes of the Great Ismayen Sands.

Fauna & Flora

The plants of the Badlands seems just as hostile as the landscale itself. Cacti, brambles, and weeds are all you will find.

History

Oral Traditions

The local tribes keep an oral history of the region. It is said that it used to be as lush a land as any other, before a great calamity struck. Others say the land is cursed and we have yet to pay its dues.   The lands have been shunned by its neighbors to the north and the south. With little to offer in the way of resources, there was no incentive to brave the harsh conditions.

Half-Hearted Settlement

Similarly, early explorers from the empires of Eodrand made only novel attempts to explore it. Outposts were built to bring faith to the natives, but this was only a token effort at best.

Gold Rush

This all changed drastically when the first XXX of YYY was found on the banks of the Perquito River. What followed was 5 years of rapid population and industrialization as the powers of the world scrambled to stake their claim.   The Rugallan Empire, with its nearby colonies, was quick to capitalize, establishing the first commercial mine with the help of the United Rail Service. Not to be outdone, the Voshain Empire sent Adalia Berchtold herself in Spear of the Righteous. Voshain City was quickly established on top of a newly established mine.   While these two empires push and pull, there are still plenty of spoils to be won. Even the reclusive Baomen Empire has recently settled the land, seeking their fair share.

Tourism

You'd have to be a fool to plan a vacation to Ald'oui

Lawless Lands

There is no central authority in the Badlands. Individual nations send strategic forces to their settlements. These forces are limited in size due to the scarcity of resources available in the badlands.   Some towns and homesteads are independent. They are responsible for arming themselves, or hiring support when needed.   Theft, robbery, and murders often go unsolved. Bandits set-up ambushes on the roads to catch unwary travelers.
