The movers and shakers of Braythe

While the champions of the world-islands are among the most powerful beings of their domains, they are by far not the most powerful entities in Braythe. The magic that turns them into paragons and allows them to create a new world is granted by hidden beings of godlike might. Aside from the champions, few people know anything about them, and their chosen ones usually prefer not to talk about them.
The motivations and goals of these Powers of Braythe remain as unknown as their identities. The only certain thing is that they want the worlds to exist, and their inhabitants to live. Most world-isles are left in the hands of the champions, but there are rumours about Braythian worlds where they take a direct influence.
Their antithetical enemies are The Perishing, nightmarish creatures that seem to desire nothing less than the destruction of all world-islands in the purple void. The Powers of Braythe have never been seen to fight them directly, and most of those who faced them found a quick death. Their rotting touch seems to be able to kill any creature, no matter how powerful, with a single stroke. The land upon which they walk turns black, and it takes powerful healing magic to restore it.
Even the Old Beasts, creatures the size of continents or at least of entire kingdoms, seem to fear the Perishing. They float or swim freely through the void, living worlds of their own, each a unique individual. If a Perishing sets foot on an Old Beast, it is as if the world-creature is infected. Most of the time, they heal, but sometimes, the appearance of a Perishing leads to the death of such a beast - and anyone living on them.
Some believe that the Purple Void itself is also a power of its own. While it appears to be little more than a highly magical ether, there are theories that the void is actually organic, and possibly even conscious. No such theory could be proven by now, though.
