Brandaren Units of Measure
or How Brandarens Count
Numeral System
The numeral system most common among Brandarens is a duodecimal system (base 12).
The names of the numbers of this system are derived from the names of the Guardians, due to the fact that there are twelve of each.
For the sake of simplicity and understanding, all numbers throughout this site (unless otherwise noted) are in base ten.

Units of Measurement
A wide variety of measurements were remembered or devised by individual communities, but when the Three brought together the Three People, the measurements were consolidated and properly defined as seen below.

Time
Calendar Time
There are 60 seconds in a minute, 60 minutes in an hour, and 24 hours in a day, with days beginning at dawn, and 8 days in a week.
There are 8 months in a year, 8 years in a cycle, and 12 cycles in a circle.
This is by no means an in-depth explanation of the Brandaran Calendar.
Counting Time
Besides the calendar time, a person can be said to be a certain number of cycles or circles old, without having to complete one consecutive amount of such- this means that if a person was born in Market Year, then the following Market Year they will be one cycle old, even though they have not completed one calendar cycle (Pandrae's Year through the Year of Doom).
Cultural Time
Because of the harshness of the Year of Doom, all people born within the same calendar cycle (from the beginning of Pandrae's Year through the end of the Year of Doom) are said to be of peerage, and can consider each other equals in the sense of age.
Calendar cycles are also used to determine one's relative age- the youngest of those within a relative age set are considered just as able as the rest, as they are the ones who spent their most fragile day, the day of birth, being overlooked by the Doom, and as such are already miraculously hardy considering they survived. The following are the Sypen's relative age based on calendar cycles:
- First cycle - Infant
- Second cycle - Child
- Third cycle - Adolescent
- Fourth cycle - Come of Age
- Fifth and sixth cycle - Adulthood
- Seven and eighth cycle - Middle Age
- Ninth and tenth cycle - Elder
- Eleventh and twelfth cycle - Wizen
- Beyond a circle - Circlen
