Wolf's Head Peninsula

A land of great mystery to those who visit from afar, the Wolf's Head Peninsula is full of beauty, danger, intrigue, and adventure for any who walk its lands. A place that is no stranger to conflict, many of its denizens have had to take up arms to defend themselves from supernatural threats such as demons, goblins, corrupted fey, and much of the wildlife that lives in the same region. Still, it is a land with active realmtides that continuously threaten the region's stability and prosperity. These phenomena have prompted the current Meteor King to issue forth a delegation to Varderal to see if it can procure more Realm Dials to better predict where and when such disturbances may appear.

Geography

Of the many natural features on the peninsula its natural elevation close to the "neck" of the wolf is the first prominent detail most travelers will notice. The two famous gates of the Domain stand at the bottom escarpments that lead up to a total elevation of 3000 feet above sea level at the top of the segmented cliffs.

Fauna & Flora

The Wolfs Head Peninsula is home to many varieties of plants and animals considering its latitudes. Mostly, this is thanks to the different types of land-forms present, from mountains to plains, to tundra and many forested areas.

Mundane Fauna

The region is home to a wide variety of beasts adapted to cooler climates, but also enjoy a brief, mild summer. As such, many hibernating animals, such as bears, bats, skunks, and more are easily encountered here.   Various ruminants like deer, mountain goats, yaks, and cows enjoy grazing all over the land, wary with many common predators and territorial animals such as wolves, foxes, and the dangerous wild boar. A variety of macaque adapted for cold weather can also be found here.   Though not many travelers make it to the Domain of the Meteor King for various reasons, many that do remark on the little flying squirrels, that dot the landscape.   Surprisingly, it is home to a larger number of reptiles and amphibians than one might expect. Many species of frog, newt, snake, lizards, and more appreciate the moisture found in this area, many having adapted to storing more fat or hibernating for parts of the winter.

Supernatural Fauna

In the more remote locations beyond the general range of the civilized areas many creatures of might and mystique roam the wilderness. The many influences from demons, fey, and other powerful influences have saturated the region with many variations of dangers and wonders.   While more common further to the north-central and north-western areas of the continent, Remorhazes do still make the occasional appearance when the snows are particularly heavy. They fight with terrible yetis in the mountains, or worse still, with frost giants and no small number of white dragons, making the mountains particularly dangerous the deep of winter.   Winter wolves are particularly venerated as they are the namesake for the region, and some special varieties can appear. Many who live in Yōsei in particular leave offerings of meat to them and, in a sense, buy protection from them. As for famous guardian spirits, there is also tale of a powerful Kirin that roams the land. Many have surmised that it has a lair somewhere in the peninsula, but no traces of its beneficial influence seem to be apparent on any surface of the land, at least, none have been found that match the tales of such creatures.

Mundane Flora

In the warmer regions of the peninsula it's not uncommon to see a mixed temperate broad-leafed and coniferous forest, including grasses like bamboo. Venturing further north, the deciduous trees thin out and most of what's left are the evergreens.   A great number of medicinal and culinary plants can be found all over the region as well. Angelica root, ginger root, cardamom, greater burdock, wormwood & mugwort, tea, clove, cinnamon, persimmon, licorice root, honeysuckle, and many more.

Supernatural Flora

As if the turbulence of the fey and demonic energies were not sufficient, the added influence of the Dragon's Head Meteorite further suffused the land with another layer of alien magic.   Fey Flora include:
  • Nymph Blossoms. While similar in appearance to a snowbell flower, this particular plant has petals that are yellow-cream colored near their base that turn to a sudden vibrant red near the ends. They express a soft glow at dawn and have a unique smell, similar to a blend between a honeysuckle and a rose. They are typically found in the vicinity of Fey enclaves and are a sign to travelers to take great care in their travels and not linger. They are unique in that they can only be properly harvested by someone with fey ancestry and can produce a unique potion capable of relaxing even the most exhausted traveler.
  Demonic Flora include:
  • Reaping Willows. Some areas have seen incredible bloodshed from many desperate battles against the demons. Though more common in The Corpse Grove, the vestiges of old blood can sometimes cause a tree to become animated by demonic energies. Normally, the forests are surveyed for any traces of blight, but sometimes demonic life finds a way. Reaping Willows are often at the center of a small glade where no other tree grows near, almost as if they elected to move away. The ground at the roots of the tree is often littered with the carcasses of wildlife as they were cut down by the trees now razor-sharp leaves, whipped to shreds. The tree can even extend its branches and roots a fair distance to attack would-be loggers attempting to burn it down.

Spirit Wood is particularly common on the peninsula, and some say new varieties can be obtained here that grow nowhere else.
