Why another world, laura?!

To create a rich setting for my book with interesting conflicts i can pull upon. I also want to break out of the standard medieval fantasy mindeset that i always seem to fall into and stretch my wings with something a little new.

How is it going to help you?

It will give me solid foundation that i can build and expand upon through my creative writing. It will give readers a world that captures their imagination and leaves them wanting to know more about it.

Why should readers care about your world?

Clockwork technology powered by magically contained Daemons!

Genre

Clockpunk / Magipunk   Industrial revolution - without all the smog

Feel

To the reader the world should feel rich and woundrous with an air of discovery. On the flip side they should also realise that all is not golden, and a growing malcontent beats at the heart of all things.

Tone

Heavily tarnished, but a hefty amount of elbow grease could bring the shine out

Recurring themes

Small signs of decay: tarnish, rust, rot, dilapidation etc.   magical clockwork inventions   Disgruntled citizens

Focus

  • Class relations: The new technology is expensive and there is a growing divide amongst the populace both in terms of wealth and power
  •
  • Religious influence: There are differing opinions within religious organisations as to whether using Daemons to power the tech is justified, blasphemous or somewhere in between. Some are more vehemnent than others.
  •
  • Technology influence: The continued expansion into powered clockwork is rapidly changing the way people live their lives
  •
  • Arts and culture influence: A growing desire to demonstrate ones wealth and position has seen an increased interest in art, architecture and fashion

Let's shake things up a bit

  • Recent discoveries claiming to have come from the Gratok desert, have certain individuals obsessed with launching expeditions to find a way across the rift.
  • Rumours of militarisation of the growing population of pure elves in the southern jungle are making those in power nervous. Some have begun shoring up their own military
  • Religious groups, against the use of Daemons, have been recruiting from amongst the discontent lower classes and sowing unrest, they may have their own agenda though.
  • The manner of the Duke's death has sown some amount of panic amongst the nobility as they wonder who did it and if any of them might be next
  • Tales of monsters from the rift have always been considered just that, tales told by fringe dwellers to discourage people from venturing into their lands. However, with the recent interest in the Gratok desert, more credible rumours are leading some to believe these may be more than just tales.
