Coal carriers

With the advent of the Daemon machines, the use of steam engines was slowly phased out within the city. Coal became a regulated commodity and the trading of it within the city became illegal. Since the coal trade had been quite a lucrative business up until this point, there were people that were quite upset by this ruling. Coal mining for export to other nations was still allowed, but selling it within the city became a punishable offence under the law.   The worst hit by this new legislation were the coal carriers, people who delivered coal to homes and small businesses. Rather than having to deal with a constant stream of people coming to the warehouses to buy coal, the trading companies hired people to deliver it to their customers for them. These coal carriers were a regular sight on the roads of Salike, and there were over one hundred of them working within the city at the time the new legislation came into force. With their jobs now illegal they all had to find new work.   The coal carriers transported the coal around the city in mule drawn carts. They would fill up their carts with sacks of coal from the warehouses early in the morning and had usually finished their rounds by mid afternoon. Each driver had a set route they would take through the city each day, and customers could usually predict the arrival of their coal to within a couple of minutes. Most homes and businesses had a small coal shed in the back yard, this had a small chute which opened to an outside wall. The carriers would empty the contents of the sacks down the chutes and store the empty sacks back into the cart. The sacks would be taken back to the warehouses once all the coal had been delivered, and the carriers would then re-fill them ready for the next day's deliveries.
