Unicorn Birthdays

Unicorns are immortal celestials, though they can be killed they really don't die of old age so much as they return to the heavens when they tire of the world. When that happens a celebration occurs, but this is about the other side of it; the birth of a unicorn. When unicorns mate, they mate for life. Sometimes, regardless of gender, they can have multiple mates for life. A unicorn gestation is not difficult, but it is long and can take up to ten years, because of this the newborns are welcomed into the World with great joy, and the whole tribe celebrates together. No celebration is less or more than another, regardless of parentage.   The celebration takes place the first full moon after the birth, and the whole tribe level herd gathers around the young in a circle. A dance is performed during the full moon's highest point, much like a weaving knot square dance, as the unicorns sing a song of welcome to the new lives. A feast is gathered to treat the little ones, and pledges are made to the newborns along the lines of, "I'll teach you [whatever they can teach]" "I'll protect you to the end!" "You'll never lack for anything!" Generally, typical things that the individual unicorn would perform in the herd all the same, but it acts as an introduction.   Following the vows, each of the herd presents themselves before the young and grants them a gift of wisdom. They also formally introduce themselves by name. At dawn the herd circle the young once more, and do one last dance, wherein at the end, the young name themselves before the gathered circle, and make a statement of intention. First intentions are not just first impressions, they direct the young to their earliest self chosen studies, to be learned alongside their standard education.

History

This celebration used to take place on a smaller scale, but as propaganda to reinforce the unicorn collectives' cohesiveness it was appropriated and aggrandized for unity's sake.
