Undeath
The undead are not unfamiliar to the World. Most cultures are fully aware of the dangers and have precautions and protocols woven into the fabric of their daily lives for dealing with their various forms. Though peoples can be taken by force, it is never really by surprise, normally. Usually, undeath is caused by a curse, or a litch, or a litch curse, and so those aware of local dangers usually have the upper hand. Unfortunately in 4 BME, a rise of the dead occurred on such a scale that the people of one kingdom's capital were completely overwhelmed. The cause was the Black Snow, or as the Unicorns tell it, a cursed volcanic eruption. The dead rose within the bounds of where the fall of the Black Snow covered, and not a foot farther. This involved the dead of thousands of years and hundreds of generations; had the unicorns not been there to stop the inward advances of the undead, the people would have perished at their boney rotting hands. Had the unicorns not been there, the people of the capital would have at least had an escaping chance to live, as the undead did not leave the zone of the Black Snowfall.
As the Black Snow falls sporadically throughout the World with the beginning of the Modern Era, overshadowing the joy of the new Spaceport, peoples begin panicking and demanding solutions, as they rapidly grow exhausted. The unicorns, being the sole survivors of the freshly questioned and potentially debunked "Cursed Volcanic Eruption Incident" are called upon as the primary researchers for how to prevent the rise of the undead, since no one has ever seen an undead unicorn anywhere ever. In this, the unicorns decide it is their blood, and begin donation centers with the high price of the mandatory signing of the Creed of Unity for all localles that wish to participate in the innoculation process.
