Clerics and Faith in Berkana | World Anvil

Clerics and Faith

Berkana has a polytheistic belief centered around 7 main gods. Ashia,Ilyia, Urias, Innaula, Hailyn, Eogyne, and Eidyse. The gods are explained in more detail in Deities. Players who wish to play clerical characters are encouraged to read through the gods.
The primary mechanics for Clerics revolves around Consecration, Blessings and Devotion. Consecration represents the basic favor and protection of a god/ goddess and grants a minor effect. Blessings are the powers that Gods grant their followers that can be used to create magical effect. Finally devotion is the means that a Cleric can gain use of a blessing.

Consecration

Consecration requires a holy symbol of the god be worn and a short RP to activate. When consecrated the character will receive the initial consecration benefit which acts passively on the character. Additionally characters will be able to benefit from Blessings and their effects once they are consecrated. Normally unless specified the effects of blessings cannot be used or passed to characters not consecrated under the specified god/ goddess.
Consecration can be done at anytime during an event. The passive effects of Consecration are immediately gained. If a character chooses to take off thier consecration symbol they must be reconcecrated in order to regain the passive benafit. Once someone trained in Theology is consecrated they may gain Blessings they have been rewarded during Devotion.

Blessings

Blessings are the powers that Gods grant those trained in Theology when they engage in devotion. A blessing is broken down into three parts, Intent, Prayer and Effect.
Intent states the limitations and how the blessing works. A Blessing can have multiple intents, the description of these are located on the sidebar.
Prayer is what has to be spoken to active the blessings effect. Each time a blessing is called upon the prayer must be used even if it gives a long lasting effect.
Effect details the mechanic effect of the blessing when activated.

Devotion

This is how a character trained in Theology is able to access a Blessing and is the corner stone of playing a cleric. Much like consecration you may only gain blessings from devotion once during the day and once again during the night. Though you may take part in multiple devotions.
A character must be consecrated before participating in devotion. Once an individual or group decides to do devotion they will take turns drawing marbles from a bag. Those that are not trained in Theology but are consecrated start by drawing a single marble, if it is white they keep it near them. Next each individual with Theology draws a number of marbles specified by their skill. If they draw a white marble they add it into a collective area. If they draw a black marble they may exchange it for a white marble drawn earlier by those untrained in theology, if none are available it is placed back in the bag. Any untraded white marbles are placed back in the bag once everyone has had a chance to draw. By the end their should be a number of collective marbles.   Multi Theological Devotion: Sometimes you may wish to attempt devotion with multiple characters concecrated under different God/Goddess. When this is attempted there should be a Long RP for each Diety represented and thier devotion tied into the RP. Otherwise the Devotion is done as normal.
This collective value is used by all participants in devotion to trade in for blessings they have unlocked. Blessings are divided into three different ranks titled Boon, Gift, and Laurels. It requires 1 marble for a single boon, 2 marbles for a single Gift, and 3 marbles for a Laurel. It is important to note that you may only choose blessings from the god you are consecrated under at the time of the devotion and only from those you've unlocked.

Unlocking Blessings

You may be wondering how to gain access to blessings. There are no clerical skills that grant blessings, instead a character must complete trails specified on the God/ Goddess' blessing page to unlock one. Until this happens a character trained in theology cannot gain access to a blessing during devotion.
Characters may complete any trial from any of the God/ goddess' as dictated by their skill access. Once they do so they must find a game organizer to unlock a blessing. Unlocking a blessing represents a power being bestowed on the character and thus it is random. Based on the trial they complete they will draw a single blessing from those available within the category of trial. the blessing they draw will then be accessible to gain from completing devotion.

Blessing Intents

Passive
A passive blessing continually has its effect applied once it is activated by the prayer and may be passed to another Consecrated character. Once passed on you lose the Blessings effects. You may gain additional uses of the same passive blessing by spending the required number of marbles during devotion. Some passive blessings will have additional requirements which will be in the blessing description.
Active
An active blessing requires that the prayer be used each time to use the effect. Active blessings can be used on non consecrated characters. If an active blessing have requirements which will be found in the spell description.
Communal
A communal blessing is able to transfer to multiple Consecrated without losing the effect on oneself. The prayer must be given each time it is passed on but all present may gain it at the same time. Unlike a passive blessing you may only ever have one active communal Blessing at a time.
