Lizardkin are humanoids with a long tail. Their muscles are generally thicker than than most other humanoid species.
Lizardfolk are unique among scaled humanoids in that they are not related to dragons. Their scales are much harder than those of draconic species. They're more closely related to lizards, having a flesh crest running from between the eyes down their backs to the tips of their tails. Their hands have thick claws along with their feet. Their faces each have long snouts with an eye on either side of the snout. The scales cover their entire body.
Genetics and Reproduction
Lizardkin mating begins around the beginning of spring and the eggs are laid in early autumn. A female will generally lay around five or six eggs at once, but approximately half will not hatch and become food for the newborns. After this, a female won't be able to lay an egg for the next five years. If a female Lizardkin is severed from males for too long, she may reproduce asexually by having unfertilized eggs double their chromosomes to make a full set. Any offspring from this method are male.
Growth Rate & Stages
Lizardkin grow rapidly for their first 6 years and then slow down until reaching physical maturity at 14. Lizardkins are considered middle-aged at 30 and old-aged at 50.
Ecology and Habitats
Lizardkin generally live in the swamps of the island Iguanus as the main predator of smaller animals. When lizardkin travel outside of the swamps, they try to stay in dark and damp areas like sewers, abandoned buildings, and saunas.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Lizardkin subsist on a diet of completely meat. In fact, they cannot process vegetables. Lizardkin generally hunt big animals and chop them up and save them for later. They also have no problem with eating other, dead lizardkin.
If a female is currently fertile, she will become more agitated and defensive during mating season.
Lizardfolk are nomadic and live in a very "every man for himself" mentality. While they'll work together to get things done, lizardfolk generally don't form any emotional connection to other lizardfolk.
Uses, Products & Exploitation
If a lizardfolk is part of an organization, they'll generally be hired as expendable dumb muscle.
Geographic Origin and Distribution
Most lizardfolk live on the swampy island of Iguanus, although there is a large group of them in Sawtooth Swamp.
Lizardfolk generally have lower intelligence than other races and are considered simplistic and stupid by other races.
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Lizardkin can see in the dark, but other than that, their vision is average. Lizardkin also have a high capability to smell and taste, but their touch and hearing suffers. They have no extrasensory capabilities.
Civilization and Culture
Lizardkin name each other collectively based on notable deeds or actions. They make no distinction of male or female names.
Lizardkin prefer their mates to be muscular and strong, as that will generally correlate with having hardy children.
Lizardkin courtship is incredibly alien to other humanoids because of how violent it is. When mating season begins, males first fight over which female they want and then once there is one male per female, they will fight it out for the season, both with words and actual violence. If a female dies during courtship, the offending male is exiled and if a male dies during courtship, then that female is given to another to create a strong child before she is exiled. If the male gives up on the battle, then the female will seek another partner, but if the female gives in, the couple begins mating. Some elven scholars believe that the female will usually "allow" a male to win if they earn her respect.
Lizardkin mostly don't create emotional connections to their mate, but if the child is exceptionally successful, then a couple might create a "pair bond." Once a pair is bonded, they consider themselves one being and will treat each other closer to how other humanoids treat each other. A couple who bonded will also be monogamous with the male waiting for the female to be fertile again before having sex.
Major Language Groups and Dialects
Lizardkin on Iguanus speak Lizalfos, a guttural language with few actual words. Meanwhile, lizardkin on the mainland speak Common and the Lizalic, a creole of Draconic and Lizalfos.
Common Etiquette Rules
Lizardkin don't have a code of etiquette as each and every lizardkin only care about self-satisfaction. However, they will mimic the customs if they are in another society to not provoke others.
Common Dress Code
Lizardkin hate clothing and will generally go about naked, maybe wearing a loincloth in other societies.
Lizardkin likely evolved out of the various reptiles on Iguanus to use tools to kill the other, larger creatures in the swamps. When they were discovered by elven explorers, some were brought back to the forest to learn more about them. From then on lizardkin became a rare occurrence to see on the mainland. Over time, more lizardkin would reach the mainland by taking the occasional explorer boat back. Once the Elven Empire ceased exploration efforts, lizardkin on Iguanas were unable to leave the island and the lizardkin on the mainland were unable to get back to the island. These lizardkin on the mainland would eventually fight back against the elves in the Sawtooth War, eventually gaining control over most of the Sawtooth Region.
Interspecies Relations and Assumptions
Lizardkin generally view other races as potential dangers if provoked or potential meals. The smaller the race, the more likely they are food to lizardkin.
Most lizardfolk are incredibly muscular from youth, partially due to living a nomadic lifestyle of only high protein in a swamp.
Body Tint, Colouring and Marking
Lizardfolk are generally green in color, although there are some brown and white lizardfolk. However, their crests vary much more wildly from fluorescent colors to more muted, earthy tones.
