The Sect itself owns the land around the compound, which it rents out to farmers who provide bits of their produce to feed the sect. They also own several herds of domesticated animals (cows, goats, pigs), for food.
Education
The Education section of the Sect is divided into two sections. The Inner Sect and the Outer Sect.
The Outer sect teaches things like mathematics, reading, writing, comprehension and history to outer and inner disciples. This is similar to a boarding school or university in modern times. If one shows themselves to be adept at any of these, or exceptional at all, a Teacher from the Inner sect might sponsor the disciples movement from Outer to Inner. There are also tournaments, twice a year, where one might move from outer to inner sect.
Inner sect teaches much more, such as basic cultivation, seal-making, monster-hunting, mystery-solving, and other cultivator stuff. It is only once one is invited the the Inner Sect that one begins learning cultivation techniques.
