Session 3. Exposition
General Summary
This began at the end of the library visit. They head back to the hotel. There. They saw the evening papers, and read about their exploits and the fire. They are disturbed, and get paranoid about the car. They discuss things, but then go to bed - a long day. But they do manage to arrange to meet Dionysius the next day at the track.
Tuesday, October 13, 1931:
In the morning they receive a note from the garage. They swing by and discuss the price to fix the car and the price to turn the red car blue. Satisfactory arrangements are made. They also are starting to get the idea that the police are not widely respected in Bayport.
They took a ride out to the Polucca place, which seems utterly abandoned, sealed up, etc; they did find a hidden doorway into the basement and signs of life there - though nothing is happening there now. They may come back at some point.
They met Dionysius at the track. They got down to brass tacks. They asked about Sidney Pebbles, mostly, as well as Steinmetz Associates. They had seen Steinmetz’ widow’s name - Marina (Van Cleve) Steinmetz - and realize Dionysius is related. He tells them what is going on, what he things it is. They are not sure fi they believe him, though he seems as honest as a rich idler can. He told them quite a bit - the Van Cleve’s machinations, Addison’s reluctance, though everyone else seems to want him to take over. In the end, they got Dionysius drunk, and between flirting with Lloyd and Lloyd dropping stories about Ghosts of Bayport, a new movie he’s planning, Dionysius spilled all. Or, as much as he knew. He told them to talk to Ignatius Towle, or to Martini or Colville; he said something about Patrick being an engineer, not an artist - his toys. He said a lot about his relatives, but they did not pick up on all of it.
They also won some money on one horse, and lost on another.
They ended up back at the hotel, which is where we stopped.
