The Hunger of Dragons

This tale details the origin of Draconic greed and the fracturing of a relationship between Father and Son, both gods and both dragons. These two gods were Bahamut, the father and God of good dragons, order and hope and his son Mammon, former holy warrior of the gods turned devil Lord of hell Mammon, the God of greed and wealth.

Summary

Following the creation of the mortal races and under some unknown circumstances many of the gods would come to produce their own offspring much like the mortal races and animals of Bavelion had been created to do. One such parent was the first dragon Bahamut, who had been deeply saddened by many of his Cousins being sent into the abyss by Asmodeus, which began a relationship of disdain between the two despite similar ideas and domains.   Bahamuts child was named Arthreis and his domain would be Generosity and Giving. Artheris was a large dragon with two sets of wings, with scales made of electrum with two eyes like massive emeralds. Arthreis looked upon the mortals and saw the disarray they had began to sow in their developed civilisations. They had began trading cattle, eggs and animals as a form of currency which the gods saw as baffling. Arthreis posed a solution, the creation of the concept of money. He developed the tiers of Platinum being the highest and Descending down to Copper.   Arthreis would later come to help the gods in the battle against the demons arising from the abyss and helped many mortals in the conflict by distributing help to them in the form of weaponry and medical supplies. Around 10 years before Asmodeus would form the lords of hell, Arthreis would come upon a strange artefact which would change him irreparably.   He found this artefact while on a incursion on demonic forces of jubiplex on the plane of Bavelion. They were seemingly defending this golden gem like deltahedron which seemed to glow and pulsate from the inside almost inviting touch. The object was small enough to fit in the hands of a mortal, so Arthreis would assume the form of a mortal to take hold of the object while the army of dragons with him looked on in a daze, their stares locked on the stone. As soon as Arthreis gripped the object there was an immense flash of bright light which seeped into the dragons hearts forever altering them. The gem had reversed Arthreis from a altruistic God to a greedy one. However the changes were not immediately noticeable and Arthreis swore his army of dragons to secrecy never to speak of the event that transpired.   However dragons all across Bavelion would feel the change within their very souls, both metallic and chromatic. They began to demand the Currency and precious gems which the mortals had began to use as trade. They also began to amass the newly crafted magical artefacts in their hauls. They would maintain their attitudes and alignments whether they be good or evil, but are overcome with unnatural avarice   This would be felt by no dragon unlike the events catalyst, Arthreis, who kept the gem with him now at all times on a ring on his large Draconic finger. His scales began to turn a shade of gleaming gold much like the colour of the gem. He began to be irratable among his fellow gods, disagreeing with their decisions on How to deal with the constant flow of the demonic hordes, which naturally made him a target for maniupulation by the god of Order, Asmodeus. Asmodeus spun a web of manipulation and beguilement, eventually turning Arthreis to resent his father and the original gods.   Bahamut would soon find out about this and lashed out at his child, creating a massive arguement between the two, which in the end would result in Arthreis leaving mount Celestia and joining asmodeus' council of the nine and descending into the nine hells and would come to rule his own layer of hell in Minarous, becoming a haven the greediest of creatures, many evil dragons included. Arthreis ressented his name taking the name Mammon and becoming a gold skinned tiefling in very well decorated clothing with his gem on a staff.   Arthreis would meet his father once more during the War of the Triune batteling in the land which would become Redwind, a later haven for dragons. Bahamut would be disgusted at his sons devilish appearance and the two would battle until the appearance of the Un-maket at the end of the war. following this the two would part ways, Bahamut becoming regretful in later years at how he treated his sonand not seeing the fact that the gem had twisted his sons mind. the twowould meet once more much later during the battle of meridia, but that is a story for another day...

Historical Basis

this event is believed mostly true by scholars and wisemen, as the knowledge of this event would be confirmed when mammon would make an actual appearance to the people of the nation city, meridia, with the gem in toe and acting as though the tales had said.   the actual origin of mammons Golden gem has long been disputed by Scholars, clerics and Ealdormen who believe a number of different theories about the Gem. Some of the prevaling theories are the gem was created by Asmodeus in order to turn Arthreis to his side and bring him onto his side. some believe it was a Fragment of the Maker of chaos, Blawicx, and is an accidental creation. or perhaps it was a creation of the mysterious entity known as the Harlequin

Spread

prior to the battle of meridia people knew little about this story, however in recent times people all across the globe would speak of this legend to their children as a lessonof greed, vanity and posseiveness

Cultural Reception

the people of meridia find their fate intertwined with that of mammon and as such this tale is of great importance to their culture. In addition to that most of good dragon kind resent mammonfor his action and corrupting their souls for eternity, however many evil dragons look up to mammon as an example of the benifits of intense greed and wealth and as such aspire to be him, even fringing on jealousy in some cases
