Kernmoat

In the centre of the Shattered Strait sits the portcity of Kernmoat, a popular cultural destination for baron and buccaneer in equal measure. Located on Gilbert Island, Kernmoat is home to a large art industry creating theatre productions recreated as far as Madamsrest‎.   Local legends on Gilbert Island tell that one day a pirate king will arise from amongst the rabble of sailing beggars that cross the waves, and he shall make Kernmoat the central jewel of his kingdom. The Kernmoaters eagerly await the day that they finally gain the recognition they believe they deserve, and more than once some poor sailor has been dragged out of a pub by eager locals to be crowned the pirate king.

Defences

Most of Giblert Island is inaccessible from the sea thanks to the steep cliffs that surround the island, known as the Sylvan cliffs. The only accessible area trough which an army could realistically enter the island is through Kernmoat's own port.   Facing the sea stands a large fortress, containing seventeen 12-pound cannons which are supposed to protect the island from invaders from the sea. In practice however the fortress is little more than a decoration, and the general tasked with running the fortress spends most of his time in the local library. Separating the city from the rest of the island is the wide moat from which the city got its name. The moat is filled with filth, dumped there by the locals, and is only flushed during high tide.

Points of interest

Kernmoat is renown for its many theatres, none of which are as grandiose as the Theatre Pinafore. The Theatre Pinafore is roofed with the hull of the old Pinafore galleon, once the terror of the Shattered Strait. The theatre is build near the edge of the sea and can be filled up with seawater during high tide by opening the flood gates. Playwrights have used the water to recreate scenes taking place out at sea such as those in The lives and times of Joseph Barnafader and to create miniature naval battles.   Kernmoat is also home to the Library of Natural History, a library dedicated to the study of the natural world and to the worship of the heavens of Earth, Metal, and Wood. The library has four separate wings, laid out as a cross from a central circular courtyard: one for bestiaries, one for botanicals, one for compendiums on minerals, and one for everything else.
