Origins

Yunesa Zinwain's keen senses, peerless tracking ability, and uncanny stealth saved countless lives during the Crusade of Light. The Shix, being creatures of darkness and deception, often tried ambush tactics during the war. Yunesa, and the other scouts she trained, were almost always a step ahead of the enemy. At the close of the war she was rewarded greatly for her protection of Alverion's people. She was given the Athalon Timberlands and a great many subjects. Alverion also remade Yunesa and her new people; granting them all a grace and beauty inspired by Yunesa herself, thus creating the Fenvar.

Culture

Yunesa Zinwain loved nature. When Alverion created the Fenvar, this love was made a part of them. Every Fenvar feels a connection to the plants and beasts of the land, and especially to their forest home. Rather than clearing nature away to build their civilization they have built a kingdom alongside nature. Their buildings are in, on, and grown from the trees. What farming they do is in small patches using existing glades. They try, in all aspects of life, to work with nature, rather than overcome it.
I always liked talking with Yunesa back then. Good head on her shoulders. I was worried she might let her anger spread rot in her forest. I ought not have wated so long to accept her invitation. It is as wonderful she always said, and meeting you all, I see my fears were misplaced.

This connection to nature makes almost all Fenvar uncomfortable in the towns and cities of other kingdoms. The few Fenvar who leave Athalon almost always make their homes in or near small villages, rather than larger settlements.

Names

Fenvar have two main traditions regarding naming children. Some parents choose to give a single first name, as has been common since the . The current queen of Athalon for example, is named Arnkatla. Before becoming queen she was Arnkatla of the High Meadow. High Meadow was her clan, but becoming queen meant becoming separate from the clan structure.   The other tradition involves naming a child with a phrase that describes a nature scene. For example, the previous queen of Athalon was Queen Midnight, but her full name was "Moonless midnight, a chill in the air." The phrase may describe the time of their birth, a moment special to the parents, or just be something the parents found pleasing. Fenvar with these names select one part of the phrase to be their common name, which is then followed by their clan. This tradition has slowly grown in popularity and is now slightly more common than the older tradition.

Tattoos

When a Fenvar turns twenty years old, they are given a tattoo about mid way up their neck. It is done in black, is roughly one inch tall, and encircles their neck. The patterns in the tattoo are fairly simple geometric shapes. The front portion of the pattern is chosen by the young Fenvar to represent themselves. The left side of the tattoo incorporates their mother's pattern, the right incorporates their father's pattern, and the back signifies their clan. In the case of parents from separate clans, the young Fenvar is given the choice of either clan's pattern, or a melding of the two.   Some Fenvar will keep only the base tattoo, but the vast majority add to it throughout their life. The additions are made both above the base pattern, sometimes rising up the back of the head or encroaching on the face, and below, sometimes growing to encompass the shoulders and upper torso. These additions vary wildly, but are often heavily in the vein of vines, flowers, and other natural imagery. Some opt to continue in all black for their additions, while others have extravagant colors. A common choice for simpler color schemes is to mostly maintain the black while incorporating their eye color.

Appearance

By human standards, the vast majority of fenvar are considered beautiful. Some say, while well out of hearing of any priests, this is because Alverion made them in Yunesa's image and he was enamored of her.
Yes! That's what he said! Told us he bumped into a Fenvar woman when he climbed up to clean the chimney. He seemed so earnest he had us hooked for a spell. Then he started going on about how she was blue but her hair was orange and that she introduced herself as "Falling Rain." Started laughin' right then we did, almost didn't hear when he said she left by leaping to the next spire! Sven always was a bit cracked, but I never knew he could tell a tale!

Most fenvar are between 5 and 5.5 feet tall, though some approach 6 feet. There is no difference in average height between males and females. They are a universally slender and lithe people. Some fenvar have skin tones, eyes, and hair in the colors typcial for humans; others have colors taken from the wide variety of nature. If you have seen a hue on a flower or bird, there has likely been a fenvar with skin, hair, or eyes that color.   Age
