The Desert of Lost Souls

I used to scoff at those who spoke ominously of the desert. I mean, how much worse could it be than devils wandering around city streets? I’ll never take my caravan anywhere near there again, should I ever get the nerve to travel that way. Two good men, lost to whatever rules there. And my sweet daughter Lyva…   I’ll never forgive myself for leaving her behind.   -Tovik Narrowbridge, Taersian merchant

Geography

Many have professed that the Desert of Lost Souls exudes an ominous atmosphere, as if the ground itself is somehow tainted. The air is hot and stifling, the wind dry and giving little relief from the heat when it blows. Simply looking over the land can give one a feeling of despair, many claiming that a deep thirst overcomes trespassers even just a few yards in. It is clear that finding water in this unforgiving land is unlikely at best, and the land seems to stretch out forever.   The desert is mostly flat ground until you get closer to the center. It is here that large rock formations can be found and the ground becomes hillier and more treacherous to travel, with very few trails winding among the hills. While most of the hills don't rise more than ten or twenty feet, a number of the rock formations rise up to twice the size of the largest hills. One expansive area appears as if the rocks were purposely put in place to serve as a large sheltered area. No one has dared to travel close to this place in quite a long time, so if anything does reside there, it remains a mystery, although it is possible that the community of desert giants that travels the northern part of the desert have information about this.

Fauna & Flora

Various kinds of cactus dot the landscape, along with occasional small areas of desert grasses. The lovely flower known as Crimson Splash can be seen from time to time, the flower rising up two to four feet on its thick, hardy stem. It is the only flower, save those that some of the cacti produce, that can be found in this desolate area.   Mostly snakes and lizards reside in the desert, although hyenas reside around the outer edges of it, very seldom being seen deeper in the desert. Fennec foxes thrive here, as do numerous sorts of insects and other vermin, scorpions being the most common.
