Lord of Law

You are correct, barrister. The word of the law is clear, and therefore I can do nothing but declare the prisoner not guilty and release him. However, for any who might attempt to take advantage of this creative loophole in the future, I can only say that it will not exist for long. Tonight, I shall study the law in its entirety and close up that loophole and any other that I might find to prevent future exploitation. Be warned that the prisoner might wish to relocate himself and his family as soon as possible, because I assure you that his actions will be henceforth be closely watched.   -Hedrif Keyvile, Lord of Law, City of Draikaal in Ardreth

Qualifications

In order to be considered as a potential Lord of Law, the candidate must have at least ten years of work as an active magistrate. The rulings of said candidate must show a strict observance of the laws in place. Those who show undue mercy or compassion are usually passed over for consideration, although this can be overlooked by those who have been found to have evolved in such a way that is pleasing to those in charge of the process.

Requirements

A Lord of Law must be intricately knowledgeable of each aspect of the law. While it is not required, it is considered highly desirable that the Lord have created and/or adapted laws to make them more amenable to the powers that be.

Appointment

The final choice for who becomes a Lord of Law in each country is the High Lord of Law. The High Lord of Law can only be appointed by the ruler of the country, usually with the approval of their patron devil.

Responsibilities

The Lord of Law manages the other magistrates in his or her settlement and appoints minor magistrates as needed. He or she is also expected to find weaknesses in the laws and fix those weaknesses as well as suggesting new laws to the High Lord of Law, who is the one who makes the final decision.

History

This title was put into place merely a dozen years or so post-Hellgate, although it has been refined throughout the years. As the devils solidified their control over Bastarre, they knew that they needed people in high positions of the government to maintain order and respect for the law.    At first, they placed trusted individuals with this title only in the capital cities to preside over the magistrates there. The role of the Lord of Law was to put laws into place that would encourage citizens to follow the law, but also to discourage civil unrest. The Lord of Law was given ample power to make laws and to modify them as needs be.    As the power of the devils became even more solidified and they found leaders content to be puppets to their fiendish masters, Lords of Law were placed in all towns and cities in each country. They would all then report to the Lord with the highest authority in those countries, and that individual was henceforth known as the High Lord of Law. All new laws and modifications to old laws must be approved by the High Lord, who answers only to the country's leader and his or her patrol devil. The High Lord of Law wields a great deal of power in each country, and even the rulers tend to defer to them in matters of law and order.
