Kingdom of Zodanga
S
acked by Helium in 491O93 HE, Zondanga under Heliumetic subjugation became a resentful city-state of gangsters and assassins. After the Warlord's disappearance in 3O94 HE, Zodanga, still a vassal kingdom of the
Heliumetic Empire, became emboldened by new opportunities. Positioning itself as a cultural leader on Barsoom, Zodanga fashions itself a champion of the empire's social justice causes all the while using its networks of organized crime to sow seeds of discontent and onerous networks of usury . It has united loosely with Phundahl and Kaol, instigating a social movement to reinstate the cult of Issus in Kaol and the cult of Tur in Phundal. Many suspect the involvement of the Holy Therns.
Zodangan Theater
One of Zodanga's chief exports, Zodangan theater is a crude form of popular entertainment denigrating love and the beautiful and valorizing the ugly.
Public Agenda
Although Zodanga once perpetrated one of the largest sustained campaigns of genocide on the planet, against the
Green Martians, today it actively deflects public discourse by alleging the commission of war crimes and injustices by other nations. Zodanga currently maintains an excavation crew, more than two thousand strong, operating on the bed of the Throxeus Ocean. Reports are surfacing, alleging the discovery of a mass grave of more than three million at the site and strong evidence of the warlord's hand in the matter.
Demography and Population
The City of Zodanga is the most diverse city on Barsoom, including amongst its population people of nearly every kingdom and sentient species. Unlike many other Red Martian kingdoms (especially those far distant from the Wadjetan Canyons), Zodanga accepts immigrants from across all of Barsoom. Her particular openness to immigration is due to a combination of factors. As a vassal kingdom of the Heliumetic Empire, the nation hopes to strengthen both itself and ideological defiance against Helium by fostering a diverse population regularly exposed to its cultural products. Being one of the first nations to abandon slavery, Zodanga also uses immigration as a means of maintaining a reserve labor army, paid less than its citizens. Zodanga also maintains the largest debtor prison on the planet and, extending immigrants vast sums through credit, keeps them fettered to the kingdom through onerous interest rates and the threat of imprisonment.
Much enmity exists between the Horde of Thark and Vassal Kingdom of Zodanga. The former will never forget ages of genocide perpetrated by the latter, nor will the latter forget the sacking of its city by the combined forces of Helium and Thark.
