Mizaru Ethnicity in Barrens' End | World Anvil

Mizaru

The Mizaru are members of the Dahl species. While they are not the only culture to develop on their home world of Hey'an, but they are one of the few that actively leaves to explore the galaxy. Like most of the species from their home world, the Mizaru are born without eyes and sense the world through the perception of the subtle energies of the cosmos.   Inquisitive, curious, and affable, the Mizaru culture is organized around seeking the greater balance of the cosmos. This balance requires them to see the grand scheme of the universe. As such, they often venture away from their home world to seek a better understanding of the elements of equilibrium beyond the horizon of their solar system.   The Mizaru are an ancient people. Yoake, the legendary founder of their people, fought off the great darkness to establish the balance for his people, and establishing the virtue of bringing justice to the systems of their world, and eventually the cosmos itself. There are many interpretations of this idea among them. Some think of them as a spiritual directive, while others see it a creative mandate. Art, music, fiction, and mysticism are the main exports of the Mizaru to the galaxy.   Since, they are capable of perceiving the true intentions of others, war, empire, and colonialism are rare and unnatural concepts on Hey'an and among the Mizaru themselves. As a result, many spread out into the galaxy as explorers, performers, and scholars as away of bringing balance to the worlds of others.   As the story goes, at the time of Yoake, a great darkness threatened the people and the land. This darkness was a void in the subtle forces that permeate all things. He learns that this darkness is caused by an imbalance that consumed these energies rather than allowing them to flow through the systems. The power didn't transmute, it syphoned away. Through many trial, Yoake learned to release these powers that had been bound up in demon, Kurayami.   Ever since, the Mizaru have sought to bring the balance to all situations they find themselves in.

Ideals

Beauty Ideals

Since the Mizaru, like all Dahl, are blind to visible light, they gravitate to what they refer to as beautiful spirit. The balanced state of the subtle energies of the cosmos is the highest form of beauty. In people, this is a good nature and hospitable demeanor. Mizaru art is simple in outward form, with the goal of bringing a expression of the particular energies together in a way the evokes memories, emotions, or recognition.

Gender Ideals

The Mizaru concept of gender is quite fluid, leading to their language possessing hundreds if not thousands of words for different states and presentations of self. The closest word they have to gender term present in many other languages is daisega, which roughly translates to, "with child," and describes the temporary state of carrying young until birth.

Courtship Ideals

The Mizaru don't have a concept of courtship or dating. They enter the orbit of others growing closer and farther apart over time. Most Mizaru relationships are polyamorous.

Relationship Ideals

In their native language, they use the same words to describe the relationships as they would to talk about a solar system.   Roughly translated:
  • My Sun: Mother, person who gave life.
  • My Moon: Father, Second Mother, other Guardian, the person/people who guided your upbringing.
  • Fellow Moon: Siblings
  • Companion: This is the word to describe multiple stars in a system or planets, moons, or asteroids that share an orbit. It is used for close intimate or romantic relations, and never for just friends.
Other terms cannot be translated simply into other languages; for example, close friends are called a word that means, "water bearing comets who seeded my world." A general friend is called, "rich stone that brought the elements." Acquaintances are either called, "stars in my sky," "fellow world," or "belt of possibility" referring to an asteroid belt that could coalesce into a world. Most translators simply render these words as friend.

Dahl (descriptor)

The Dahl species are all born without eyes. Instead of perceiving the world with through vision (the effect of light rebounding off surfaces). they see the subtle energy of the cosmos and its relation to the energies around it.
