Ecology and Habitats
The branch of dragon depends on the environment they live in. Their scales will morph to the colouring of their environment and may even grow metallic depending if the dragon consumes various ores within the area.
Dragons normally search out natural caves and will continue to dig through the land in search of various ores. They will also dig treasure caches within these caves to store the various ores and gems they uncover. They will also create a hidden treasury that they will store the gold they find. Gold is the ore they treasure the most as it is the item needed to perform a dragon's ascension.
A dragon will only leave their home to hunt for food and will usually fly to water to fish for food. Some times they will stay close by to eat the local flora or fauna in the area. Some dragons who cannot find a large enough location to house them will live above ground, adapting to their environment and using the flora as a cloak.

Dragons have an magical bond with the invisible planes and are able to commune with the departed dragons who chose to forfeit their destiny to rebirth into a star and instead fused into the land to enrich it with the gift of a dragon's life.
It is in these locations that other dragons travel to learn and to lay their eggs. In these locations the eggs gain a permanent invisibility protection from all creatures except for dragons (including dragonbornes).
The youngling a grow up learning all the knowledge of the guardian dragon and safely protected from any other creature that may seek to cause them harm.
History
When the goddess Laurel, created the many different races, she had made a deal with the goddess of death, Empyrean. The terms of the pact was that Empyrean would kill off some stars and give their remains to the goddess to bless her creations with life. In return the goddess must create a species that is tasked with the rebirth of the stars she would kill.
Thus dragons were brought into creation first and with them the birth of magic. They naturally sought the collection of star dust and upon their death, must consume the star fragments to unite it within them to be reborn upon their death.
Historical Figures
Common Myths and Legends
The First Dragon
The first dragon created, Chronos was so powerful that he could manipulate time. He saw the birth and death of all things and created many powerfully magical items.
Fearing the power of Chronos, the old gods tricked the dragon by giving him a divine gift. It tore his soul from his body and disintegrated his body into sand. To prevent the revival of the dragon they placed the sand into an hourglass and cursed it to turn any mortal who touches it into stone. As a further punishment for touching the hourglass, the mortal trapped in stone will remain fully aware and will remain alive within the stone, till the end of time. Never being reborn, and never being set free from the curse.
Chronos' soul however escaped the grasp of the gods and was able to be reincarnated. Any creature reincarnated with the soul of Chronos is automatically gifted the power of chronomancy.
Starbornes
All dragons hear from young age the tales of ascension. When a dragon lives to their twilight years, they must consume the fragments of stars to ascend into paradise. They learn how their souls travel with the body of the star into the sky and become reborn as a life giving sun. Some dragons however, will take the power of the star and use it to give life into the planet they decide to merge with.
There are also tales of dragons who could not pass on because they never fulfilled the task of collecting enough star fragments for ascension or even having their star fragments stolen from them after dying. All these factors contribute to a dragon failing to ascend. Some dragons may turn to even dark magics to extend their life to complete the tasks but will never be able to ascend.
To assure that a dragon ascends into paradise, the star fragments must be purified over a period of 200 years. 2,400 lbs of star fragments must be purified but 2,700 star fragments must be consumed before death.
