Homes in Saler Thaer

Many of the homes in Saler Thaer are built up against the Ulbilqui. Their hard mud bricks are sealed to the lower surface of the structure, making it seem as if the inhabitants are slowly making their way up the tower. The bright colors common in Saler Thaer give a festive quality to the community, seeing the town from a distance, many travelers liken the image to colored paper squares piled at the foot of the Ulbilqui.   Many of the homes at ground level take advantage of the space, using the earth to tend small household gardens and small parks. The homes built on the Ulbilqui use their visibility to further brighten their looks. Lengths of rope and string are strewn throughout the vertical buildings, all festooned with flags, drapes and blankets with a variety of designs adorning them. On windy days, many refer to the noise from the upper levels as "lad ruide," which means "the cracks" in the local dialect.   Most of the homes in Saler Thaer are modest affairs. They have 2-3 rooms. One of which is a common area, while the other spaces serve as communal sleeping areas for the family members. Nearly all have small shrines to family members, adorned with paper ornaments, photographs and oddities that belonged to ancestors. Home interiors tend to have scores of family photographs and drawings, as well as the works-in-progress of any laboring family members. Because of this, many homes have a cluttered, but warm atmosphere which can provide a glimpse into family life without even having to ask family members.

Architecture

Most buildings of Saler Thaer are baked mud, painted in a variety of bright colors. With the lack of rain in the region, most roofs are flat, though some have a cursory spout or drainage gap.
