The Winged Isles
Geography
The Winged isles is an archipelago located off the Western coast of Valothmir. The Islands are dotted with both mountains and active volcanoes, whilst beautiful sandy beaches run along the outside. Plenty of fresh water comes down from the mountains providing life to the island's flora and fauna. The few people who have been able to document the isles, claim that large cave systems connect the isles, both beneath the land and the water.Ecosystem Cycles
During the months of Artiela through to Oladon is the most notable of ecosystem cycles on the winged isles as it is the breeding season for dragons. During this dragons that are ready to mate return to the winged isles to find a partner and raise their young. During this time the dragons become incredibly territorial against other creatures and their own kind.
Once the breeding season has ended the majority of dragons take off to their hunting grounds around the world. Leaving behind only the oldest of dragons who remain on the isles all year round.
Fauna & Flora
Upon the island plant life thrives with the majority of the isles covered in dense rain forests, home to thousands of different plants. The cave systems that run beneath the archipelago is also home to subterranean flora, such as bioluminescent fungi and moss.
The Winged isles are home to some of the most unique fauna on Axeram as it's the breeding grounds for dragons. The winged isles also have an unusual level of other reptiles, which make up the majority of larger wildlife within the archipelago. These include smaller lizards such as gecko's, all the way up to drakes and dragons.
The archipelago is also surrounded by reefs, so the waters are abundant with different types of aquatic creatures and coral. Providing an excellent hunting ground for both sharks and aquatic dragons.
Natural Resources
The winged isles are an untapped resource for rare metals that exist within the subterranean caves. The organs and scales of dragons are also an incredibly valuable resource. However, due to the density of dangerous flora within the isles, most hunting trips are profitless and thus rare.
History
Whilst technically under the jurisdiction of the Kingdom of Igrahne-Valen no people or settlements exist on the Winged isles. However, there have been several attempts to colonise the islands due to their natural beauty but no one has been able to work around the dragons. Especially when breeding season comes around as the dragons become extremely territorial and must also provide extra food for their young.
That being said, there are tales of pirates and adventurers who have survived on the islands for months and occasionally years. Though all accounts state that they survived from dumb luck and keeping a low profile. The reef is also home to many shipwrecks that failed to navigate the archipelago. The survivors of such wrecks rarely last long. Most don't even make it to sure.
