Tribe of the Fading Mist

I have a strange feeling that our preconceptions of this tribe runs contrary to a strange reality within that dense expanse of jungle.
— Phidi Strideheart, Traveler

Overview

A tribe that so far has successfully isolated itself from the growing political powers of the Continental Island of Lluvia. They are reclusive and do not like to deal with outsiders. As such not much is known about them. No one outside their tribe knows exactly where their home lies within the dense Wirwar Jungle much less anything about their daily life there.   What is known is that the tribe trains some of the best hunters and trackers on the continent. These hunters and trackers are often tabaxi and aarakocra, and they are identified with the tribe by their elaborate and magically enchanted tattoos; most of these are imagery of various plants and animals that exist within the Wirwar Jungle. These tattoos cannot be replicated anywhere else though many have tried.

Indomitable...

It's hard to dominate something when it is elusive. This is a lesson that the Kingdom of Helia continues to learn to this day. The Kingdom publicly denies failure on the grounds that expeditions to the Wirwar were mere scouting parties. However, a story has nevertheless breached their borders concerning an entire legion sent into the Wirwar Jungle to find and subjugate the Fading Mist. Most of the legion never returned, and those that have insist on blaming the jungle itself for their failure. Rumor has it that these very survivors have been imprisoned and the highest ranking officer put to death for their failure.

...yet Fading

Despite never being threatened by anyone during their long and secretive existence, the tribe's name is not without merit. It is said that the tribe began is time in the post-collapse world as one of the strongest groupings of survivors. Evidence indicates that this tribe was once an early state. Over time, their reach and influence faded. Perhaps their strict laws caused many to leave. Perhaps they are suffering some kind of subtle affliction. Some have suggested that they haven't faded at all and instead hide in plain sight. That last one is a bit conspiratorial, but an interesting thought all the same.

Magic Traps

The Fading mist is also believed to be responsible for the magic traps found throughout the Wirwar jungle.   These traps are considered by many to be additional evidence that their home lies somewhere deep within the Wirwar jungle.
