Fenjafólk

How much do you have to distrust the rest of the world to willingly live in that swampland?
— Phidi Strideheart, Traveler

Overview

The Fenjafólk are a small group of reclusive people living in the Škodljive Swampland. Not too much is known about their way of life. It is believed that they live within the trunks of large trees or in the mouths of small caves as these formations could protect them from the bugs and the noxious fog that pervades the entire swampland. As a result, they can be difficult to find to the untrained or unaware eye. Fenjafolk are skilled at hunting as they know how to best traverse the swamp unobserved. Clothing is usually made from fibers that can be found in the swamp, and anything they need to build is made from reeds. As the swamp is largely inhospitable due to the swarms of bugs and dangerous gasses, the life of a Fenjafolk is one occupied with survival.

Why the Swamp?

As for why the Fenjafolk willingly remain in the swampland, one member of the tribe relayed in a conversation with Phidi Strideheart that they choose to remain in the swamp because it is a haven from the rest of the land. Phidi tried to learn more about what exactly the Fenjafolk feared from the rest of the world but only got similarly general answers. Perhaps it is the inevitable great war that they wish to avoid. Perhaps they believe that an advanced civilization is a fundamentally flawed prospect against nature. Whatever the reasons, most Fenjafolk do not wish to leave the swampland. Those that do leave the swamp to pursue a different livelihood are prohibited from returning.

Fenjafolk Food

Fenjafolk have developed many ways to create meals using bugs and grubs. Larva salad is reportedly the most common meal with eggs seen as a most luxurious item. They are often paired with any other kind of food they can make, hunt, or pillage in on the border of the swampland. Phidi wasn't exactly enamored by her choice of meals during her visit, but had to admit that the crickets paired with alligator wasn't too bad.
