Circle of Vicissitude

This circle had enough luck to survive the greatest calamity of our world, and that was it. Knowing what lies under that hill can turn any stomach.
— Artur Neha, Traveler

Overview

The Circle of Vicissitude is so named for how the structure has had many sudden changes of circumstance. Often these changes were for the worse.

Architecture

Like most ancient structures, the Circle of Vicissitude, when discovered, was a skeleton of metal. At least that is what the records describe, for much of the structure was buried when the village of Patera repurposed it as a tall defensive wall.

History

Ancient Remnant

The Colosseum began life as one of the great structures of the The Ancient Order. How it was used by the Ancient's remains unknown, though many guess that it was built for entertainment before it became a ruin.

Village

When the circle was rediscovered, it was seen as a ready-made barrier for a tribe looking to settle. When they settled within the circle they moved a large quantity of dirt and other materials to fill in the gaps of the structure to fortify it as a defense line. This was the circle's new purpose for many years. The village was called Patera.

Small Lake

The village was destroyed during a sudden and still unexplained flood. It would take many years for the structure to drain due to the filled-in walls. Not content to abandon the home of their ancestors, the surviving inhabitants began to establish Nova Patera around the new lake. As the lake was artificial, it never held any fish. That didn't stop people from "fishing," however.

Challenge Circle

When the circle finally drained, was repurposed as an entertainment site. As Nova Patera had its own defensive wall, the walls of the circle served little purpose as defense. In particular, it became the preferred spot for high ranking town officials to settle disputes through dueling. Additionally, many citizens of the sight would gather in the center of the circle to mourn the lost ancestral village.

Graveyard

Nova Patera as a populous settlement came to an abrupt end with the sudden invasion of the Kingdom of Helia. The bodies of the slain were piled in the center of the circle as its walls would keep the horrific sight hidden from view as the Helians repurposed the surrounding landscape. The walls of the circle also contained the smell. A tall hill exists where the corpse pile once was in testament to the slaughter that had occurred there. This hill now has many gravestones on it, though no one is sure who has been placing them there.   It was after this latest change in circumstance that the circle become known as the Circle of Vicissitude.

Note(s) from the Archivists:

What's next for this circle? - Archivist Rena   It might become a bona-fide crater soon for all we know. Things often change in a direction we don't expect. - Archivist Savitori   My bet is that it'll become a necropolis. - Archivist Bob   That is... surprisingly likely. - Archivist Taenya
