Summer's End Star-Chase

In the hunting plains just to the North-West of the Ildonian Archipelago there is a late summer meteor shower which happens annually. Most folks simply enjoy the light show from afar but those who know the halfling plains-riders may join in on the festivities more directly.   On these nights for 3d4 days the halfling nomads of the plains gather on the highest plateau in the Northwest. Here they boast about their largest hunts of the summer, share their excess and bounties, break out their finished crafts from last year, and have friendly quarrels about whose are the best with tribe elders eventually deciding winners and bestowing honors upon them. Large pit-fires are dug at the base of the plateau so as not to create light pollution with pit-roasted meals paraded up to the star-watchers above throughout the event. The only other light during the event comes from the stars themselves and peeks out through the gaps in the cloth of tents. Mostly, the tribes sleep late during the day only waking to prep for each night's festivities. Staying up all night for the duration of the star-fall is expected and celebrated.   Young hunters and adventurers trusted by the tribes dedicate themselves to "The Chase" during these nights. Parties will ride out into the grasses of the plains to watch the sky carefully waiting for their moment. When an impact is sensed by any parties they race against the others on The Chase to be the first to claim the Sky Quarries. These are meteors fallen into the plains of various sizes and materials. Often times they are hardened metals or stone but occasionally they may be glass or even iridescent or luminescent mineral materials. Sometimes these fallen stones bring with them fire from the sky which sets blazes to the grasslands. It is assumed that any in the chase will aid in extinguishing these brush-fires before they get out of hand. Rarely, these skyfalls bring with them elemental beings or tear astral rifts into the plains themselves letting unnatural creatures through. When this happens it is the pride of those in The Chase to hunt these creatures and boast about their prey once captured or slain. The materials found during the chase are returned to the Plateau for judgement and bartering bids among the elders as they are seen as some of the best crafting materials for the following year. The most commonly accepted offer is that of a crafted item for delivery to the hunter next year. The chance to show off their work with these wondrous materials is highly sought after. Trust is given in most cases but sometimes an offer of last year's craft is offered instead.   Elders and those incapable of the strenuous hunts remain at the camp to watch the shower of stars, trade stories, take on crafting apprentices, and prepare a filling meal fit for those who participate in the festivities. It is common for unions between tribes to be made through new family bonds and for new tribes to start off on their own when a young leader has gained enough confidence to join "The Chase" on their own. This is not considered a betrayal of the previous tribe, it is seen as a new branch on their powerful family. Usually a new tribe will take a name of symbol they pays homage to their previous tribe and the cycle continues.
