Dwarven History of Families

The Dwarven culture of Averena is one that builds off the strong foundation of history. As a long-lived race, their living memory spans many human generations. And beyond that, they have very carefully collected records of what has come before.   Dwarven culture is also one that puts great weight on an individual's Clan and Bloodline. Dwarves are a proud people. Recounting their places in history, and the place of those they are close to, is an almost sacred duty.

Purpose

Every Clan has a Clan Library, usually in the home of the Clan Leader. This is where the histories of the Clan are collected and safeguarded over generations. This is also where the Clan's Lore Keeper keeps their official records. The Lore Keeper is charged with writing the official History of the Clan. This includes things like marriages, births, deaths, important positions held by Clan members and notable achievements.   Each member of the Clan will also keep a journal of their own. These are often leather-bound books, presented to a dwarf when they reach adulthood. These journals are filled over the course of their life with anything they would like to pass on. For some, it is very much like a diary -- sharing their daily thoughts and even minor events. Others maintain their journal as more of a resume, using it to document achievements and events in their life in the way a history book written years later might. Those who are very skilled in a particular craft or trade keep detailed notes of their works, sometimes keeping a second journal exclusively for their works.   Upon a dwarves death, their journal is added to the Clan library and they are honoured as part of the Clan's history. The Lore Keeper will often read the journal when it is added. This allows them to add any important items from their journal to the History of the Clan, but also allows the journal to be indexed to be easily referenced later. It is important that when the History of the Clan is referenced the journals of those involved are easily retrieved for more information.   A skilled Lore Keeper is very familiar with the Clan's history, but also with the specific journals contained in their library. They are often able to retrieve journals on a specific craft or of members relevant to specific events without referencing the History.
