Necromancer Profession in Avaria | World Anvil

Necromancer

Centuries ago, before the founding of the kingdoms of Valgarde occultists would seek the dark knowledge of necromancy to raise armies and crush their enemies. Some few would use this knowledge for the protection of their people and town, using a wave of unkillable horrors to fend off rivals but more often they would be used to pillage and burn peaceful communities.    In the vales that would later become Southern Ardania, a Warlord called Hamath the Fiend constructed a tower and reigned over the area with an army of unliving servants to do his bidding. After a brutal raid by the undead, an unlikely group of rebellious youths rallied the oppressed locals to rise up in a bitter conflict.    In the centuries since Necromancy has been outlawed in the three kingdoms and later the empire. Practitioners that are discovered are universally executed to prevent their foul magics from protecting them.    When the Order of Justicars was formed in 355 one of their chief vigils was against the use of necromancy even to raise heroes from the grave and as such the school of necromantic magic as a whole was outlawed.    As with many things deemed illegal for a long period of time, curious and power-hungry have begun to uncover the forgotten and outlawed arts and Necromancers seeking to recreate the domain of Hamath have appeared throughout the history of the Empire, each time they are crushed under the full might of the Imperial Armies and the Justicars but that has done little to deter those that follow in their footsteps.
