Imperial Guard
Across the Valgardian Empire, each town and settlement of note has at least a squad of guardsmen dedicated to its protection from the abundant dangers of Caldaris.
Since the inception of the Empire, one of Emperor Vakarian's promises to the Valgardian citizens was a constant guard presence in all major towns or cities. This helped to both unite the conquered kingdoms and keep any civil unrest in order.
Each Duke, Count or Baron keeps several regiments of guardsmen throughout their land in depending on their station within the empire and the size of their province. Loyal to the Emperor before their banner lord they stand separate from the main armed forces of Valgarde and exist to protect its people from the many beasts and criminal elements that would seek to prey upon them.
Each guardsman is provided with a salary paid by the local lord from the taxes on the land and once they passed training will be assigned to a fort or castle on the borderlands for a 2-3 year period to gain experience after which they will be reassigned to a town or village for life.
Though they are provided basic accommodation with their post many go on to start families in the areas the guard and form strong bonds to the area.
It is customary for the third child of a noble house to become a member of the guard, usually an officers role due to their superior schooling. Guard policy does not make any concessions due to noble birth as any incompetence in the field can be deadly.
Tensions have been on the rise since the end of the last war as many displaced creatures and criminal organisations seek new places for themselves in ther empire, it falls to the guard to maintain the order and punish any found breaking the law, and in extreme situations call in the Justicars.
Structure
The Lord Commander reports to the Empire and is part of the Imperial Assembly.
