Hubris Settlement in Avaria | World Anvil

Hubris

A sizable settlement on the northern base of the Stonefang mountains, the town of Hubris has a long and storied past. Originally settled under the name Gaspar's Fortune by a group of Ardanian Merchants seeking their riches in the mountains the town grew until it gained the notice of the Ironbreaker dwarf clans. The Dwarves saw the humans as one more invading race and warned them to leave. When the warning went unheeded they descended from their mountain forts and wiped out the settlement raising it, and inadvertently starting a war with Ardania.   In the decade that followed the kingdom of Ardania drove the Dwarves back into the mountains and settled the town under the name Defiance Hill in open mockery of the Ironbreakers who they had defeated. The next few years were prosperous for the settlement until the Dwarven High King himself arrived to challenge the Count in honourable combat. The count fled leaving his town once again at the mercy of the dwarves who allowed the humans to stay but built several bunkers and strongholds around it and sticky forbade mining and a stalemate took over, both sides daring the other to attack, each refusing to yield the ground.   Several years passed until the Duegar army attacked. Driven by some unknown purpose they emerged from the world below and waged war on all they encountered. Defiance Hill was overrun and the Humans of Ardania and the Ironbreaker Dwarves found themselves fighting a common foe and temporarily set aside their grudges to face the Duegar together. During this great War, later to be known as the Scouring of Axes, a mighty human warlord appeared. Tyrus Vakarian had brokered a truce between the warring human kingdoms and soon allied with the Ironbreaker Dwarves and Aelvari of Asunar. Combined, this allied force was able to defeat the Duegar and send their remnants scurrying back to the world below.   When the war was won Tyrus Vakarian, backed by the Aelvari and Ironbreakers declared the founding the Varlgadian Empire, from the ashes of the three human kingdoms.   The settlement known as Defiance Hill was obliterated by the war and when the fighting was done the surviving humans and dwarves, now allies by treaty stood together to rebuild a town for both peoples. It was named Hubris to remind all future generations of the price paid for the pride of their forebears.
