Tarilin
The Tarilin are the people of Earth and Water, born alongside the Tilothrin and Ilpenarin on the slopes of the Starmount at the beginning of the Age of Mortals.
Their patron gods are @Ilmarie, goddess of water and @Taroth, god of earth.
Of the three races, they were the first to develop animal husbandry and large-scale agriculture. They are known to be slow of speech and deep of thought, and are superb craftsmen. When they joined the Tilothrin in the kingdom of Astarie, they helped create the most wondrous cities and temples the world has ever seen. Although that kingdom now lies drowned beneath the sea, some of their great works still remain. The great city of Huarnan, whose walls and gates have never failed, is their work.
Civilization and Culture
Major Organizations
Unlike the Tilothrin and the Ilpenarin, the Tarilin have retained the ancient tribe/clan/family organization that all three of the mortal races once shared. Although in some ways the lines between them are so blurred as to be nearly invisible, the Abings, Bodings, and Threlings still retain distinct identities.1
There are 18 primordial clans, to which each modern clan traces its ancestry. The ancestry may be entirely mythical, for no records reach so far back in time, but the claiming is vastly important for cultural purposes.
Gender Ideals
Gender roles are minimally separated among the Tarilin. Men and women work the fields, tend their flocks, hunt, and fight side-by-side.
Women frequently train for war and fight beside the men. The Tarilin being less numerous than the other races, this has at times helped mitigate their disadvantage in numbers, but also has disastrous potential when both men and women perish in large numbers. This is, perhaps, the root of their decline in the modern era.
Men
Men are expected to defend clan and tribe, and provide for their families. The role of provider is not restricted only to men (women work beside men in all areas of life), but is of primary importance when women are bearing and nursing children. Physical strength is greatly prized. Men take great pride in their own size and strength, and women tend to gravitate toward the largest and strongest men. Where size and strength are lacking, some other prowess must be sought; Tarilin men are judged by their deeds and by the product of their labor. In old age, the roles of men and women converge. They help raise their clan's children and fill a wide variety of roles where physical strength is less important than life experience. Women
Women are expected to protect and manage the home. This does not mean, however, that they are restricted only to domestic duties. Rather, it acknowledges their necessary role as mothers. Women who remain at home are not required to remain immured, but are expected to defend the home and conduct household business wherever it may take them. Robust, physically capable women are highly sought after. Traditionally, pregnant women are not restricted or confined; they will continue in their occupation until labor commences. Mothers are expected to devote themselves to their children until the children reach three years of age, after which the mother may return to her occupation while the extended family cares for her children. Housewifery is certainly not frowned upon, however. Many women become full-time mothers, either by necessity or desire.

Relationship Ideals
Strictly monogamous. Promiscuity is almost universally frowned upon.
1. The Threlings, in recent years, have become known as the Lost Tribe. Although several romantic fables purport to explain their seemingly sudden disappearance, the Scholasts of the Order of Verilios maintain that the Threlings are still among us -- they have not disappeared, but have been subsumed into the other tribes of the Tarilin and no longer have a distinct tribal identity. It is possible that distinct groups of Threlings survive in remote locations, but they have not been documented (to our knowledge, at least).
