The tale of the Dragona

The Tale of the Dragona Centuries ago the world was not like it is today. Back then, there were terrible beasts that taunted the world and caused chaos wherever they could. Most of these creatures stayed hidden and were more terrifying than dangerous. But there was one creature, the biggest and stupidest and most dangerous of all of the beasts and that was the dragona. She was a beast like no other, Wings of an eagle the tongue of a lizard and a hundred thin legs sprouting from her torso that drifted around her so that she looked like a mutated jellyfish. She had a terrible habit of picking up glass boulders in the glasslands and dropping them wherever she saw movement bellow, sending them plummeting down to the ground for a shattering explosion.   One day, Dragona picked up the biggest boulder she could and started to fly. The boulder was so heavy that the only way to lift it was to dig her claws deep into the glass. She staggered up into the sky spotted a twitch of movement bellow so she tried to drop the boulder. But, the boulder wouldn't fall. She shook her claws but still the boulder clung to her. For you see, she had dug her claws in so hard that they had lodged in the brittle glass. Her wings grew tired under the colossal weight. Suddenly, a gust of wind blew Dragona down out of the sky and she landed deep in the crater of a mercury volcano in the Starlit Shelflands.   The slippery mercury, she thought hopefully, will help ease off the boulder. But it did not. The glass started to sink into the hot crater and Dragona shook her toes. The boulder came away at the last moment and dragona fell onto the side of the crater. She was alive! She tried to take off, flapping her magnificent wings in the air but she couldn't lift off the ground. She flapped and flapped in desperation. The mercury had greased her wings so they couldn't catch the air. Dragona was flightless! With a cry of torment she raced across the Shelflands. The last place she was seen was racing into the woods, her useless wings flailing behind her.

Variations & Mutation

Generally, the variations are about the appearance of the beast although there are also some versions about the whereabouts of the dragona if they are still alive.

Cultural Reception

In some small tribes, the tale of the Dragona is one of a series of tales about massive monsters of old. The tale of the Dragona is by far the most well known of these myths outside of these tribes. One tribe, which has now dissipated, had each monster representing one of the 5 sins.

In Art

There are many famous pieces of art derived from the tale of the dragona.
