Weddings in Iroya

English

Written by FirethornDragon

Weddings in Iroya are a big thing. For them, weddings are for life. Every village, town and city has different wedding traditions. It can be anything from the food they eat to the dances they do and something special for that region. Some of their wedding traditions are variations of wedding traditions from Jahix Culture, that can be traced back to the Long Xae Dynasty. When there is a wedding in a town, city or village everyone celebrates by at least decorating their house with blue flowers and black ribbons. The colours of Iroya. But there are some traditions that everyone celebrates.

Wedding Traditions for the Families of the Couple

At an Iroya wedding, the family are the first people to bless the couple before the wedding day. The blessing of the couple can happen in different ways depending on which area of Iroya you live in. But one thing everyone in Iroya does is bless the couple with coloured water that they either splatter or pour on the couple. The water gets its different colours from flowers that grow everywhere in Iroya. The traditional colours are yellow, blue, white, green and purple. The couple's family can add any colour they want. But they must have the five traditional colours as well.       The colour yellow stands for happiness. Blue stands for always being patient with each other. White stands for a new beginning and letting the past be the past. Green is for luck and prosperity. Purple stands for the union. You always start with the white coloured water and end with purple. Before the ceremony the parents of the couple light one candle each. When the ceremony is over the newlyweds light the third candle. The lighting of the candles celebrates the union of two families becoming one. The flame from the candle also symbolizes that the couple's love for each other hopefully never burns out.

Same-sex couples and weddings in Iroya

In Iroya straight couples and same-sex couples can get married. Marriage is sacred in Iroya. For them, it's about finding the right person for yourself. In their culture, it doesn't matter if that person is of the opposite sex or the same sex. They love celebrating. For them, it's all about love and the knowledge that their child has found the right person to spend the rest of their life with. Any union between two families through marriage in Iroya is a happy occasion.

Common food at an Iroya wedding

At an Iroya wedding, the food varies depending on which area you are from. But the most common foods are stew, roasted pig, and salad with some common herbs from the region where the wedding is. Another dish is the seasonal vegetable dish. For dessert, there is either rice cake, something with honey or tarts with berries. On rare occasions, they also serve grilled fish. Another tradition is that every bakery close to the weddings gives the newlyweds freshly baked bread. It is their way of wishing the couple a happy and long life together on their wedding day.

There are ten things every couple must do during an Iroya wedding.

  • All of them must wear Iroya's colours. Either in their clothes or their accessories.

  • The couple must light the union candle together after the ceremony

  • They say wedding vows

  • They can't get married unless both families have blessed them before the wedding

  • The couple lights the first lantern together at the end of the wedding

  • The couple must make something for their husband or wife that they switch with each other at the alter before they say I Do. This thing represents their wedding ring

  • They perform a traditional dance together in front of everyone. It can be any dance from their culture as long as they perform it together

  • Every couple must have the traditional flower Treseld in their bouquets. It is the national flower of Iroya.

  • The couple goes down the alter togheter

  • They hide a small bouquet of lavender during the wedding. The first person to find it gets married next.
