Flametender

Flametender is the title given to kings of the Kingdom of Ignis. "King" refers to the ruling head of the Ignis family, regardless of gender. The firstborn child is traditionally the one next in line to rule.   The name dates back to tales of the very first Flametender. An Ignis mother and her children became lost in the cold, unforgiving northern mountains. She remained strong and determined, and before her family froze to death, discovered a hidden nest of fire dragons. Humans had never encountered dragons before, but she was unafraid.   The fire dragons were moved by her fearlessness, respect, and determination to save her children. They permitted the Ignis family to seek warmth and shelter by their lava pools and hot springs, and formed a partnership. The mother founded the capital city among volcanoes, and became the first king.   In modern times, the Flametender is supported by a large council of officials that oversee specialized aspects of the city, such as research and medical facilities, and the Kingdom as a whole.   The Flametender's most important duty is to maintain healthy diplomatic relations with the fire dragons. They are an intelligent, sentient race who have lived in the mountains since before recorded history, and due to their partnership, are most inclined to communicate with Ignis descendants. Because of this, the king rarely leaves the capital city.   The fire dragons can sense future eruptions, earthquakes, and other events. The Kingdom offers human technologies and novelties in exchange for this information. It is vital for the king to recognize that they do not control the mountain range itself, but tend to the metaphorical fires that allow their city to thrive in such a hostile climate. Without the support of the dragons and their knowledge of fireproofing, the city would crumble.   The boundless amount of geothermal energy available is a key factor in the Kingdom's thriving research & development departments, largely recognized as the best in the world.
