The Staff of Remus

On April 21st in the year 1078 Ante Deorum, the twin brothers Romulus and Remus stood amongst the seven hills that were to later become the city of Reme.  Remus insulted his brother, who was being quite the jerk at the time, so the legend goes.  Romulus assaulted Remus fully intending to kill him, and Remus being a man of magic and not the sword like his bother raised his staff and struck him down with magic.  He went on to found the city of Reme that later became the Remen Empire.   This is the same staff that Remus carried into all of his battles and imparted his magic to as his power grew.  The staff is purported to be 6 feet tall of pale white wood with a golden eagle set into the top with sapphires for eyes.  Inscriptions of various kinds run the length of the staff in a spiral, and legends say that when the staff is used the letters burn and smoke a red and blue, and then die when the magic is released.  It has many powers, including somehow helping to choose the next Emperor of Reme, though how this was done is lost to history.   The staff disappeared with the Aequam Divisionem - The End of the Remen Empire.  Remus the August, the last Emperor of the Remen Empire, is said to have hidden it somewhere.  It is said that the Staff of Remus would pick a new bearer when the need of the peoples of the world was the greatest.  The legend is interestingly specific, in that it would be needed when the whole world was threatened.  Regardless, people still search for it, scouring the hills of Reme and beyond, hoping for the fame and glory finding it would bring them.   Legends ascribe many powers to the staff, including its ability to choose a new Emperor, the ability to cast spells of war.  There are some legends where the staff allows the user to see possible futures or alternate planes where things unfolded differently, accounts seem to vary on this.  Finally, at least one source says that the staff contains the psychic impressions (but clearly not the soul) of previous emperors, which can be summoned for wisdom and advice.
"I am not sure that I would WANT to find the Staff of Remus.  It might mean that the world was in dire peril if the legends are true!"   ~Mario di Milan, Scholar of Remen studies.
