The Eforoi Myth in Atlantica | World Anvil

The Eforoi

In the days before the The Great Darkening when the K'Thonim ruled over the peoples of the world and harvested them, it was the Eforoi that were the entrusted with carrying out the tasks that the K'Thonim did not directly. It was the Eforoi that maintained the The Plekenergia stations around the world. They were the supervisors of the labor, the guards at the temples to the K'Thonim and the overseers of who was selected to be harvested when people were gathered to have their T'Shole removed.   Each Eforos was given jewelry that reflected their station and ranged from simple rings to great gaudy necklaces. These were used by the Eforoi socially to acquire goods or even mates in the name of the K'Thonim. While they largely policed themselves so that the K'Thonim were not displeased by them, for the most part they took what they desired from those around them.   Any of the intelligent species of the world could be selected as an Eforos, and they recruited how they chose to recruit, though occasionally a K'Thonim would declare someone to be a new Eforos based on some deed or attribute that they valued. Sometimes it pleased the K'Thonim to have one species of Eforoi be in charge of another species in a region if they wanted to instill fear or for some other purpose.   Writings from those times reflect a variety of attitudes by the average people about the Eforoi.  Many of them thought that the Eforoi were monstrous, horrible collaborators like opportunistic predators.  Others felt like they were lucky to have served the gods, or were lucky enough to have more than the rest, or simply fortunate to survive.   The Great Darkening changed all that.  When the Plekenergia was wrecked, its effects on the Eforoi were unpredictable because they were so close to it.  Many simply died, a great many of them were twisted into actual monsters or even whole new species, but if they were lucky enough to survive, they were usually killed by those they oversaw as vengeance for everything that had been done to them.   In Atlantica there are places where the Eforoi survived well enough that they retained some control.  Many of the K'Thonim worshiping tribes begin with their origins here.
NOTE: Eforos (singular) Eforoi (plural)
"Curse you for taking my village while I was away fishing.  Curse you for taking my woman as your own while the rest were rendered lifeless.  Curse you for eating the best of my fish that very day. I spit spit spit at you."   ~Anciet clay tablet found tucked into the foundation of an ancient Eforos home.
