Riftborne

Riftborne are the individuals who's conception or birth was located near an open or only recently closed rift. The energy from the rifts leaking out into the world would infuse into the unborn child, changing them into something else.
Originally met with distrust and fear over what was happening to common children, over time people realized that they seemed no different than normal children and eventually adults as they grew, although many had access to powers and abilities related to the rift they were born under.
There are generally two types of Rift borne indivduals, the Mingled and the Merged.

The Mingled

These individuals are those with only minor changes or traits that came from being exposed to the Rift energies. They appear as (or mostly) as their natural birth would have followed although can be changed in different ways.
Sorcerers are born this way, along with those bearing marks on their body marking where the energy has touched them. Either way, they usually have access to call upon these powers and use them to their will.
Mechanically, this is how Dragonmarked characters are able to be created in Athoria, the mark given related to a rift to grant its power and abilities.

The Merged

There individuals are the ones who are (usually) unable to hide the changes the Rift energy has caused to their bodies. These people are often mistrusted when heading to a new area who have not seen their type of Merged before. Most are quick to learn a Merged person's true intention however once shown how they act. In addition to the standard races below, there are some rare unique mutations if an individual's birth is impacted my multiple rift types.
Races and the associated rifts that caused their birth are as follows:

• Tieflings - Infernal Portals
• Genasi - Elemental Portals
• Satyr - Fey Portals
• Aasimar - Celestial Portals
• Changling - Ethereal Portals
• Shifters - Wild Portals
• Gith - Beyond Portals

Basic Information

Genetics and Reproduction

Rift Borne have been very rare until the recent influx of rifts in the last century. Therefore, the reproduction of them is not too well known. What is known, is that any parents regardless of race can birth a Riftborne child if in proximity of a rift. The size of the rift determines the range of influence it has, so no clear limit has been found.
If a Riftborne has a child with another race, there is a 50% chance a Mingled Riftborne's gift will pass on. If a Merged Parent has a child, there is 50% chance the child will also be Merged, but if not they will have the traits of a Mingled Riftborne instead.
Two Merged Riftborne of the same origin having a child together will also pass on their heritage where as a Mingled pair have a 25% chance of the power fading.
No Recorded references have been made of the result of two Merged Riftborne of differing origins has been made.

Growth Rate & Stages

Growth rates remain matching the parent's usual rate of development.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Most rift borne gain extra abilities from the planar influence upon them. Many gain the ability to see in the dark, or other senses based upon their influenced realm.
