The Warp Ship, H.M.S. Wyldspace
In the World of Athena Minerva by A.D. 2500, technology has advanced to the point that warping space to travel extraordinary distances is a reality, an extremely dangerous reality.
The process appears to outside observers as if a lens is forming in space, causing distant stars to zoom in closer. A ship passing through the lens of warped space does physically pass through all of the compressed space in between. This means that any comets, meteoroids, and of course stars which might pass through the flight path become a very concentrated hazard. Traveling a ship through such a warp should only be attempted to cross deep space, which holds approximately one hydrogen proton per cubic meter of space.
The H.M.S. Wyldspace is one such warp ship. A veritable floating town in space, built almost entirely of smart material, nearly microscopic robots which connect together to form a strong material which can change shape per its programming. The smart material and the ship itself are controlled primarily by a large Nanobot Command Ring.
Smaller NCR's exist on the ship and are passed out by the Quartermistress as needed by the crew to carry out the commands of Captain Bombay.
Her Majesties Ships traveling through the depths of space in exploration are allowed to develop their customs and social norms as they choose to form a functional team and society. Much of their homeworld, like many of her Ships, is fairly matriarchal, with males being valued a productive members of the crew, bless their hearts.
Warping space requires what scientists refer to as a "buttload" of energy, but such expenditures and risks continue to reveal new discoveries for materials science, cosmology, and anthropology as well. And human technology thrives with such discoveries.
The crew of the Wyldspace are largely hand-picked by the captain, with each crewmember capable of doing several important jobs. Many crew are unfortunately required to make repairs almost every time they shoot through warped space, leaving usually an away team of three available to perform scientific study of their new surroundings.
