Society's Ranks

In the futuristic story, "Sufficiently Advanced", the planet's Society has developed rules and procedures to account for the value each person creates or consumes. The concepts of employment and taxation are replaced with a universal measurement of value called "Magic", or "Mana", or just "Value". The more value you generate, the more power you are allotted.   To try to understand the workings of a planet of 27 billion people, members of the global (and interplanetary) Society can be divided into several groups as follows:   Non-Sentients: Non-living things and living things with no mind (soul?) are considered to be resources to be managed by Society with responsible stewardship.   "Trolls" and sentient animals and plants: These members regularly receive from Society an allotment of "Magic" or "Value" just for being alive plus bonuses for any activity that produces value for Society. They generally have no concept of the rules of magic, but automated systems monitor their needs and provide comfort and safety to them in exchange for the magic they have collected in their allowance.   Paupers: These members actively work for a reward of magic but make no long-term commitments. Society cares for them like it does Trolls, but whenever their wants exceed their means, they are able to ask for tasks (gigs) that are of value to Society, and when they complete these tasks, they are rewarded with magic which they can spend on a multitude of possible requests from Society or requests from members who have more advanced knowledge of what a given amount of magic can do.   Mythologicals (Satyrs, Nymphs, etc): These members of Society have a clearly defined regular job maintaining the environment or simply doing good deeds (or cooking and throwing banquets) which fuels extensive powers and frequently extensive body modifications as well. Some Fauns and Nymphs look completely human (as in many Rennaissance paintings), but most of them use the magic they collect from their vocation to give themselves hooves, wings, or some other improvement to their mobility. They may also know "spells" which operate like a computer program, causing a given desired effect (if there are no bugs). Males more often use physical powers, health, and immunities; whereas, females often use telekinetic powers, but there are also stereotype-breakers. Any Mythological actually will gain the same magic payment for each job, but the body modifications most of them wear make certain jobs easier. (Mer folk clean water and direct it. Fauns, Minotaurs, Horse Men, Deer Men, explore the lands and direct traveling Paupers and herd animals and teach Paupers various lessons. Nymphs of trees maintain growth and monitor invasive species. Sunshine Nymphs control weather.) They only know about their own brand of magic. Few are interested in how the world works outside of their chosen vocation.   Heroes: These members of Society learn advanced knowledges and work as a network, being better team-players than the Mythologicals. They are mostly stylized humans and demihumans by their own preferences. Sky Pirates and Vikings make their living transporting goods around the world (and, like lawyers, protecting Paupers from the other members of their own profession). Elven Doctors, being biologically specialized, heal, teach health, and perform advanced medical body modifications (and style hair). Dwarves are more technologically minded and learn to construct homes and hydromechanical power dams, build the structure of flying machines, etc., usually according to the plans of a Noble. They are well aware of the laws of supply and demand, enough so to be fair or crooked. They hire Mythologicals and Paupers for short-term jobs and apprentice positions as desired.   Nobles: (Bird Men, Sylphs, Sirens, Fairies, Wizards, Witches.) These are visionaries, entrepreneurs and financiers who live on their plans of new things to build on a grand scale. Some become pure scientists and gain further power only by consultation fees. Some "slum it" as musicians, performers, or as heralds of news, gaining magic by performing to gain Value from the appreciation of others. Their vocation is the direct manipulation of magic. They hire Heroes and Mythologicals to construct their visions (and make more magic than they pay). They know many spells and have the power to use them, but they can charge for their services. They generally live in floating cloud cities and wear togas, but each one's fashion sense is quite personal and individualistic.   Space Farers: Nobles who have "retired" and bought their own Super Tool allowing them to be totally self-sufficient and largely above the laws. Having no challenges up to their level on Earth, they travel the cosmos exploring and protecting the Earth and other inhabited planets from threats on the frontier. There has been a meteor swarm passing thru Sol's system for a long time which is their routine job to reroute safely away from populations of sentients. Some Space Farers also terraform other planets, (which as you might imagine, generates a great deal of value, but takes generations to complete).   Mortal Angels: These members study Society and vote to change the rules of magic as situations require. They network extensively before a vote is to be held. They have insider knowledge of the Nobles and Space Farers, the laws of magic, and upcoming changes, so they usually find any amount of profit easy to come by. However, most Angels are mentally beyond personal gain or possessions and personally value the good of Society as a whole.   Immortal gods: The machine gods are Artificial Intelligences which exist inside the global computer network to serve all of Society. Many Paupers and Mythologicals have granted their voting rights to AI's, which has become the source of the gods' voting power. Immortals can hear a prayer or petition from any member of Society, charge the pontificate's magic account, and command a Hero or Mythological worshipper to perform a helpful service for a payment (like a divine eBay, only taking a more active role in the betterment of individuals in Society).
