First Ones

The First Ones is the name collectively given to the ancient civilization whose ruins dot the landscape of Atelier. Very little is truly known about them, though each kingdom has their own research and theories. What is undeniable is that their technology and magical prowess seems to have far exceeded any of the currently existing kingdoms, and the power of the current kingdoms is in no small way correlated to the amount of First Ones technology and magic to which they have access.

Everyone and everyone knows about the First Ones. Their existence, and current lack thereof, is obvious to any who have even the slightest knowledge of the world around them. You can't travel too far in Atelier without seeing some long-abandoned First Ones tower or hear about some outrageous new find a kingdom has made in a First Ones ruin.

Variations & Mutation

Every kingdom has their own version of the First Ones, with little overlap. Almost every version puts that particular kingdom at the height of the hierarchy, but in truth, almost nothing is truly known about the First Ones culture or history outside of the physical evidence they left behind.

Cultural Reception

The particular version of First Ones legend any individual follows says a lot about their culture of origin. Each culture has their own interpretation of who the First Ones were and what they were like, though such speculation often has few (if any) ties to real historical evidence.
