John Faustus

John Faustus

A warlock who made a pact with the archdevil Mephistopheles in life. Famed for slaying the vampire lord Strahd & the lich-queen Sathael Prondaelan. He and his patron were romantically involved for many years and now, in death, he is Duke Consort of Cania.

Physical Description

Facial Features

His facial features are fairly average, though marred by bags under the eyes that seem to linger even in death. His most striking feature, too, centers around his eyes. When he was granted a limited form of truesight by Mephistopheles, brown irises were replaced with an all-encompassing reflection of the void of space, flecked with stars.

Identifying Characteristics

He has a prominent scar running lengthwise down his left forearm. It was left by the dagger he used to draw the blood used to sign his infernal contract. He has a small litany of minor, faded scars with less sentimental value - gained mostly from early attempts at summoning demons (which subsequently got out of his control).   Another scar is a bite mark at the joining between shoulder and neck from being bitten by Strahd in the battle of Yester Hill.

Special abilities

He wields the magic granted to him by his pact, as well as the power of the arcane secrets shared with him by his patron.

Apparel & Accessories

Most often, he can be seen wearing a set of black robes that are just on the pompous side of well-dressed. Since joining the court of Cania, he has adopted some red in his wardrobe in the form of pelts or other drapery.

Specialized Equipment

It is rare to see him carrying any specialized equipment, aside from a tome inscribed with ritual magic gleaned from any and all magical disciplines.

Past

Born to an unremarkable couple in the small town of Roda, John Faustus did not take to the family profession like most other children of his age. Instead, he spent every second he could afford to with his nose buried in the few books the family owned and, when night fell, with the old papers on infernal magic and demonology that he hid behind more innocent covers by day. When he came of age, he went to study magic at Wittenberg College, excelling at his studies. However, ever impatient, Faustus found himself drawn to seek magic from a source other than hard work and study, making a pact with the archdevil Mephistopheles. This, predictably, did not go over well with the staff of the college, who revoked his membership. He has few friends in proper academic circles these days, aside from his former protege and two mentors. In lieu of scholarly research, he has decided to make a name as an adventurer and seek out knowledge firsthand.

Employment

Prior to his fellow staff members declaring his qualifications null and void, he had been tasked with teaching introductory courses on arcane philosophy.

Motivation

He wants knowledge for its own sake, but certainly doesn't object to the prestige and power that come with it.

Likes & Dislikes

He is an avid reader, mostly perusing weird occult zines that aren't fit for publication and scripts for live performance works like operas or theatrical plays. He also pirates academic papers.   He dabbles in playing the lute, mostly just as something to idly do while thinking about other things.

Social

Contacts & Relations

Although he doesn't actively keep in contact with them, he is often recognized as a former member of the adventuring party that saved Elihyel.   He does remain in touch with the vampire Magnus Escher, whom he would consider a friend.

Family Ties

He is completely out of touch with his family, an arrangement that suits both parties just fine - not due to bad blood between them, but simply because their lives are so disparate.
