Interstellar Forces
It's the space military, but it's not actually a military and just a bunch of scientists. In space. There's a lotta drama surrounding its history. It can't quite get its act together.
Structure
Main Ranks:
(MST = Minimum Service Time; EMST: Estimated Minimum Service Time)
Trainee: (MST: <2 months) $1,000 per month. Gets basic training.
Ranger: (EMST: 0 years) $1,500+ per month active. Basic workforce. Usually used for menial labor and testing out new equipment. Doesn’t have a specialized field of work unless they’re training for a higher position.
Corporal: (EMST: 1 year) $2,500+ per month active. Responsible for keeping track of each ranger’s training, personal appearance, and cleanliness. Can specialize in physical training, medical training, flight training, or technical training. Second-largest workforce. Highest job flexibility and can work towards advancing directly into any position other than Captain, Commander, and anything above Commander.
Warrant Officer: (EMST: 2 years) $3,000+ per month active. Oversees and evaluates lower-ranking personnel (usually through the corporals). Also administers basic training.
Lieutenant Captain: (EMST: 3 years) $4,500+ per month active. Captain’s assistant; reports status updates to captain, and doesn’t necessarily exert authority over the lower-ranks unless needed. Can train to become a captain or a staff major.
Captain: (EMST: 6 years) $6,000+ per month active. Pilots the ship, gives orders to corporals and lieutenant captains, and receives status updates from their lieutenant captain and reports directly to a designated commander. Can train to become a commander.
Ship Doctors: (EMST: 7 years) $7,000+ per month active. Does and oversees medical procedures on the ship. Has the same authority as a captain. Can be promoted to a staff major.
Staff Major : (EMST: 5-7 years) $7,500+ per month active. Head of research done by some of the lower ranks, as well as doing some research on their own. Instructs corporals and captains (including lieutenant captains) in different fields of expertise including Astronomy, Aeronautics, Technology, Health, Communications, Accounting, and Engineering.
Commander: (EMST: 8 years) $9,000+ per month active. Makes sure all missions set by the chief commanders go as planned.
Chief Commander: (EMST: 10 years) $10,000+ per month active. Plans missions with a committee containing other chief commanders. There are 6 in all, heading the fields of Technical Science, Social Science, Strategic Science, Health Science, Organizational Science, and Astronomical Science
Admiral: (???) $12,000+ per month active. Oversees meetings of the chief commanders. Only one star ranger can hold this position at a time, and it’s optional.
Public Agenda
Space exploration and advancement in technology.
Assets
A few bases in the United States, a moon base, and a research base on Mars, also a number of ships, including those in the Celestion Project
History
The Interstellar Forces founded in year 40 by the United States Military to spearhead rocket research. They landed on the moon in 48, and started terraforming it the next year. The moon base Lunaria was advertised as the first step to making a livable environment away from Earth, and that turned out to be true by year 64. However, that was not the moon base's true purpose. Lunaria was to serve as a front for an weapons/espionage base, so that the IF could spy on other countries and attack them from the moon.
Around the time the martian base was set up in year 78, a young star ranger by the name of Cesar Galhardo intercepted plans to launch an unapproved, unprovoked attack on a country. It became a large scandal that eventually leaked to the public, and from then on, the Interstellar Forces' funding was cut, and they were no longer allowed to develop weaponry.
Since then, the IF has been devoted to furthering advancements in astronomy and space exploration. The weapons ban has ironically given the Interstellar Forces a negative reputation among other military branches and the American public because they believe the IF "doesn't contribute to anything important" since it could not directly participate in warfare.
There were still more changes to be made, especially since unlike other branches of the military, only men were allowed to be part of the Interstellar Forces. This was due to an astrobiologist's claim that radiation beyond Mars would render ovaries infertile. The IF treated this as fact, even though the study was old and without conclusive evidence that would suggest how and why that would be true, and they were adverse to accepting any volunteers to see if the study held up. Many protests ensued to change this.
The protests fell on deaf ears, but in year 105, it was discovered that a ranger by the name of Jun Kim had enlisted in the IF, disguised as a man. Unable to answer for themselves, the Interstellar Forces dropped the male-only enlistment rule so that any American adult age 18 and older could join the ranks.
Three years later, the IF launched the Celestion Project, an expedition involving 7 small ships, each with a crew of 8. The project aims to study the efficiency of working on smaller crews, while also gathering new information on planets and moons the Interstellar Forces had not yet been able to reach.
